Thanks, Cathey

I know very little about the history behind this, but I think something needs to be said about why the Wrights are being disowned right and left by the Friends. It seems that there was a disagreement about slavery among the Quakers at this time. Quakers were, in general, anti-slavery but it was more or less left up to each group to state their policy on the matter. Most of these Wrights moved from Bush River, Newberry Co., SC to Newhope, Green Co., TN to Back Creek, Duck Creek, and several other sites in and around Grant Co.and Henry Co., IN to find an anti-slavery meeting house. (Oh gosh, there are so many people who know more about this than I do. Forgive me, if I am in error.) When these meeting houses did not agree to state their policy, anti-slavery Quakers formed their own meeting house and so were disowned by the mainstream church for a period of 15-20 years. Most of these Wrights were members of Duck Creek, which will be in the next (#3) transmission.

Another reason why so many people were disowned is for marrying contrary to discipline. The routine for gaining permission to marry was fairly long. Some people preferred to marry and then beg forgiveness from the church at which time their membership was retained or reinstated. The waiting time for marrying after a spouse died was lengthy. Some married before the set time limit had expired.
