JCAHO Essential Education Information on Infection Control - Blood and Body Fluid Exposure
Close Window  What should employees do after a needle stick or exposure to blood and/or body fluids (needle stick or splash in eye or mouth)?

At the time of the exposure incident:

  • Clean exposed area thoroughly with soap and water; if exposure is to the eye or mouth, irrigate immediately with copious amounts of water
  • Report the incident to your supervisor and complete an Incident Report Form

Post-exposure Evaluation and Follow-up:

  • Seek proper medical treatment IMMEDIATELY:
    • 8:00am to 4:30 pm (Monday through Friday)
      • Call Employee Health at 8-0584 or Student health at 8-9220
    • After 4:30pm to 8:00am (Holiday/weekend) #4508
      • Call PEP (Post-exposure Prophylaxis) (dial *60 then enter 4508)
  • Discuss source patient information for risk assessment to the counselor. Information and recommendations will be explained to you.
  • Order the “NEEDLESTICK EXPOSURE”  lab on the source patient for :
    • Hepatitis B
    • Hepatitis C
    • HIV
  • Report to Employee Health or Student Health during their working hours for additional information and testing.
