Allergic Reactions

Antibodies in the patient's blood may react with plasma proteins present in the donor unit initiating a histamine response. This type of reaction may occur anytime during a transfusion and up to one hour after the transfusion.  The patient will usually experience mild symptoms such as itching or hives (urticaria). In rare situations these reactions may be severe and will be discussed with the section on anaphylactic reactions.
