Disposal Location Types:

  • Red Bag Trash (a.k.a. Regulated Medical Waste) - Any article contaminated with blood, body fluids or other body materials, such as

    • Wound dressings

    • Disposable pads (i.e., Chux)

    • Transfusion-related materials

    • Urinary catheters

    •  Discontinued IV bags, tubing and/or catheters & central lines

    • NG Tubes

    • Suction canisters or drainage systems (Must be securely sealed if it contains secretions. The contents may be disposed of in Hoppers or down the drain – remember, wear eye protection, gowns and gloves for this!)

    • Any item with a Biohazard Symbol.

  • Sharps - The following must be disposed of in an appropriate puncture resistant container:

    • All needles and syringes, regardless of what they were used for.

    • All suture needles and disposable suture removal sets.

    • All stylets, guide wires, lancets, scalpel blades.

    • All glass ampoules and vials.

    • All pipettes.

  • Regular Trash - The following things may be discarded in clear bags as “Regular Trash”:
    • Gowns, gloves, paper towels, masks, etc. that have NOT been contaminated with blood or body fluids
    • All paper items that do NOT have patient identifiers on them (Items with patient identifiers must be torn up or shredded!)
