JCAHO Essential Education Information on Environment of Care - Equipment Management for HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS
Close Window

Before using patient care equipment, Clinicians are responsible for ensuring that the equipment has a current Preventative Maintenance (PM) sticker.  PM cycles are either 6 or 12 months, depending on the risk of the equipment.  If the next inspection date has passed, please call Clinical Engineering at ###-#### to request a PM check.

 Do not use the equipment until the Preventative Maintenance has been completed.

 Clinical managers are responsible for:

1.   Providing Clinical Engineering listings of equipment not found during PM checks;

2.   Notifying Clinical Engineering if equipment is sent to surplus;

3.   Notifying Clinical Engineering if equipment is transferred to another department; and

4.   Notifying Clinical Engineering if equipment is removed from service.

These procedures will ensure that Clinical Engineering maintains an accurate inventory.

All staff members are responsible for learning and following job and task specific procedures for safe clinical equipment operations. They are responsible for learning and applying the Safe Medical Devices Act (SMDA) Reporting process

All incoming equipment to any XXXXX location (new, loaner, demo and/or rental) must be checked and safety certified by Clinical Engineering.  Equipment must not be used until a valid Clinical Engineering check is completed and a PM sticker attached.

Equipment involved in a patient occurrence must be impounded with all accessories until Clinical Engineering staff has checked and certified that it is approved for usage.

Clinical departments must keep records of equipment-related training and competencies.
