A Dr. Red is any incident where you see smoke, see flame, or smell something burning in the hospital, ambulatory care area, or satellite facility.  The term Dr. Red is used to alert staff of a possible fire emergency without causing panic among visitors and patients.

On the XXXXX Campus

At the Satellite Facilities:

Certain areas of the hospital and some ambulatory care sites are equipped with supplied oxygen.

  • In the event of an emergency it may necessary to cut off the flow of oxygen in these areas.  Each work area should have procedures in place for oxygen cutoff in a fire emergency.

  • It is important that you are familiar with your work area’s plan and the location of all cutoff valves.

Anytime you pass a situation where the integrity of the fire system has been altered or damaged, you should correct the problem or call Hospital Plant Operations, the satellite facility administrator, or Fire and Occupational Safety. These numbers are listed on the back of your R.A.C.E.R. card.

Example of the types of problems to look for include:

  • Blocked open fire doors.  The use of blocks, or other objects to prop open fire doors is prohibited by the fire code and against Hospital/Physicians group policy. Damaged door closers or hold open devices should be reported immediately.  Anything that prevents doors from closing during fire emergencies puts people at risk.

  • Never allow any objects to be hung from sprinkler heads.
  • Never allow any objects to be stacked or placed within 18" of a sprinkler head.

Remember to carry your R.A.C.E.R. card and ...

Use it during emergencies and drills.
