| Ahh yes, it usually starts out the same way, you receive an orchid as a birthday present or an anniversary gift or whatever. Invariably it will be in flower, & what a magnificent flower it is, lovely colouring & long lasting too. Once the flowering has finished, all you really want to do with your beloved plant is give it a little water from time to time, a little care & hopefully it will flower again next year. You dont care about those long & confusing words you hear bandied about such as terrestrial, epiphyte, monopodial or sympodial, who needs them. Pseudobulbs rhizomes, keikis, all just words in some foreign language & hold absolutely no interest for you at all. You certainly have no intentions of building a greenhouse or even putting up a special shelter for the plant. It can sit out there on the porch, itll be O.K out there for the winter, yeah, Im sure will. Yes, thats all you are going to do, just look after that one little orchid. WELL YOURE WRONG!! You might think you can care for just one orchid, but you cant! Your plant has its first flowering under your care, & boy, doesnt that flower look great. You find yourself eyeing up another plant down at the Mall, or at a display somewhere, & youre thinking, well one more would be nice beside my other one, so you buy it. You still kid yourself that these couple of plants are enough, BUT IT IS ALREADY TOO LATE! Youre infected, the addiction to orchids has taken control, but still youre in denial. You find yourself looking for a little possie for your orchids that provides the right conditions. Next a bit of a shelter starts to appear & before you know it there are a couple of different genera amongst your small collection. Youve passed the point of no return at this stage & you are indeed a fully fledged orchid enthusiast! The only thing remaining for you to do now is become a member of your local orchid club or society. |
