                 BIOGRAPHY - FRANCIS IGNATIUS MACADAM
                                                          (
Born: May 22, 1922)

Francis Ignatius MacAdam was born at home on May 22, 1922.  Dr. Roddy MacDonald delivered him with the assistance of Mrs. Julie Eldershaw, midwife.  He was #5 to the Throne.  He attended St. Mary's Elementary School from Grades 1-5 before moving on to Mt. Stewart Elementary for Grade 10.  He lived in Maple Hill with Reg and Mary MacDonald, Tena's brother and sister.  A mere 14 years old, he started lobster fishing with his Dad in the spring of his grade 10 year.

Francis (a.k.a. web, Bimmy, Frank) went to serve his country at the tender age of 17 in the year 1939.  Yes, he lied!  He trained for 2 weeks in Charlottetown and then went on to Halifax.  He was an able seaman and was sworn into the Navy on August 7, 1941.  His discharge was on July 6, 1945.  The following quote from the Charlottetown Guardian on June 20, 1944 describes a very proud and noteworthy moment when Francis was involved in an accident in Newfoundland:

"Able Seaman Francis MacAdam was commended officially by the Flag Officer Newfoundland for good service when an explosion and resultant fire occurred on board his craft in harbour."  The commendation from Commodore C.R.H. Taylor, RCN, was published as an order of the day in a port daily memorandum distributed throughout the base.

After the War, Francis became a truck driver for his brother, Gerry.  He also worked as a snowplow operator, a painter, had a contractor's license for plumbing and was the wharfinger at Red Hed Harbour.  He bought his fishing gear from his brother Carl and the era of the Patricia Irene began.  He was a fisher of lobster and tuna until his retirement.  For 2 years, he held the World Record for catching the biggest Tuna, which weighed in at 1,139 pounds!  His son, Jim, caught the largest Tuna (1,264 pounds) aboard the Patricia Irene just off of St. Perter's Harbour.

It was a very hot day on July 16, 1947 when Francis married Marion Anastasia O'Hanley at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 10:00 am.  The wedding party included best man Reg MacAdam, brother of the groom, maid of honor Leah O'Hanley, sister of the bride, and flower girl Anna MacAdam, sister of the groom.  They had a brunch at the bride's home in St. Peter's Bay.  They honeymooned in Halifax and upon their return, the groom's parents, Alban & Tena, hosted a reception of about 100 friends at their home.  The newlyweds spent the first couple of years living with Francis' brother Carl in Morell.  He then purchased his lot down by the Morell River for $50.00 and built his home which he still resides in with Stashie.  They have ten wonderful children: Debby, Charlie, Susan, Ellen, Jim, Mary Leah, Tony, Patty, Peggy, and Mark.  His first car was a Model T and the first fridge that they bought, an Enterprise, is still in the basement.

Francis was very involved in his community over the years: Lifetime Member of the Legion, Lions Club, Morell Rink Committee, Village Commission, Directors of the Credit Union Board, CO-OP Board, & Four Ports Marine, a member and Representative and organizer in Morell for the Blood Donor Clinics for the Canadian Red Cross.

His favorite things to do included hockey, bowling, cards, refinishing furniture and gardening.  He made many trips to Boston, New York, and Toronto as a truck driver.  Francis and his eldest son, Charlie, travelled to Japan after landing the biggest tuna in a tournament.  They both enjoyed themselves immensely!

As told to his daughter Peggy at his kitchen table in Morell on June 28, 2003.
