                  BIOGRAPHY - CARL GREGORY MACADAM
                                                         (
Born: February 4, 1919)

BORN February 4, 1919 at home in Morell, Dr. Roddie MacDonald and midwife Mrs. Art Eldershaw attended to the birth.  Dr. Roddie was born in the house next to Tena in Pisquid.  "I was told that it was a stormy night, but I don't recall, myself!"

SCHOOL DAYS began at Mt. Mary's School and finished in the old school that Reg converted into apartments.  "My first teacher was Lottie Rossiter.  She was 'some' teacher and I was a favourite!"  Carl di the first 5 grades in 3 years.  Grade 10 was the last one attempted.  Alban would take Carl out of school in the Fall to fish smelts and oysters and in the Spring to first lobsters.  "I refused to go back to school if I wasn't given the chance to keep up and pass."

MARRIAGES

1942 - Carl married Evelyn Marchand from Louisdale, Cape Breton.  He met her while she was staying in Morell with her sister and brother-in-law, Percy Furlong.  Carl went overseas 6 months after they were married.  Evelyn died of TB in Charlottetown on March 17, 1947 on St. Patrick's Day.

1948 - Carl married Helen Kelly from Morell on September 15.  They were married in the old St. Teresa Church in Morell.  Their first son, David, was born on July 23, 1949.  Their second son, Don, was born on August 14, 1950.  They went to Nova Scotia on their honeymoon.  "Flossie Hooper loaned us her car for the honeymoon.  This was great until she decided to come along too!"

CAREERS

FISHERMAN - Carl started fishing with his father, Alban.  They fished together out of the old St. Peter's Harbour and sold their fish to the Savage Harbour Packing Company.  They used 27' shore boats, with Carl getting his own boat and having Ralph Eldershaw as a helper.  "Gas was $11.00 a 45 gallon drum then, and there was no better man in a boat than Ralph.  I fished until my health went."

SOLDIER - He was in the Army for 6 years as a cook.  He was posted in a number of places in Nova Scotia before going to England, working mostly in hospital facilities.

CARPENTER - Worked with the Dingwall's and eventually built his present home in 1945.  "I cut down the trees, hauled them to the mill and dug the basement of the house, basically, by hand."

RESTAURANT OWNER - Carl & Helen started the restaurant in 1950 while he was still fishing.  The building was owned by brother Babe and built by Carl and John Joe Perry.  Carl bought the building located on the site of an old carriage shop and expanded it over the years to meet the needs of a thriving business.  Carl & Helen had the 'Village Diner' restaurant for 25 years, eventually selling it to his son David and nephew Peter.
