| BIOGRAPHY - BERTRAM BENNETT (BUDDY) MACADAM (Born: April 23, 1924) Bertram Bennett 'Buddy' MacAdam was born on April 23, 1924... the sixth child in a family of twelve. His education began in Mt. St. Mary's School (across from the Morell Maples Mall) and continued in the red school which is now an apartment building. Many more days were spent annoying teachers than in actual learning. When Buddy's brothers went to the services, he was allocated to serve at home and continue Gerry's business. Buddy's days were long. The day began at 6:00 am, either hauling cream or gathering pigs for Canada Packers. He hauled all the supplies from town for the local business. It wasn't unusual for the day to end at 7:00 pm. In April of 1957, Buddy decided to increase his workload and get married. Increase his workload he did indeed - five children in six years was quite a feat! These children are Maria, Tommy, Alban, Joe, and Marylou. He did his share of changing diapers, warming bottles in the middle of the night, and quieting the fights. Life's work eased a little for Buddy in 1965 when he became Postmaster in Morell - a job he held for twenty-six years. When he retired in 1991, his years of hard work took it's toll. His five heart attacks and three strokes culminated with major heart surgery at St. John in December of 1994. There were eight major blockages, but Dr. Brown did the seven bypass operation in eight long hours. Since his operation, Buddy stays very active by walking, gardening, painting, and many other chores. He also loves sports (watching, that is) on television, but especially watching his grandson, Kyle, an excellent goalie and his granddaughter Emily, a superb skater and excellent forward. Montreal will always be his favorite NHL team, even if they do play golf for most of the spring season. Buddy always stayed close to his roots, although he did take two trips to the West coast. The latter trip was to see his three grandsons, Sean, James, and 'Kelly Bennett' MacAdam. Once again, we see the union of the Kelly MacAdam names. His oldest grandson, Jonathon, was born in western Canada and is now entering his final year at Morell Regional High School. We all hope God will grant many more years for Dad to relax and enjoy his family. We all love him with his relaxed ways and dry wit. |
