青年時期看完海明威原著改編之「戰地鐘聲」電影後，心中一直納悶著為何原片名、中譯名和原著書名「For whom the bell tolls」為何完全與鐘無關，這個謎團在不久後終於解開了。

海明威的原著書名原來出自英國名玄學詩人兼傳教士John Donne（1573∼1631）的名詩Meditation XVII的最後幾句。下面引述台灣名文人兼名嘴李敖先生1972年10月27日在牢裡心有所感所作的片段名譯。由此方才了解，鐘為誰敲？乃為亡靈而敲。海氏的書名，一開始便揭露了書中結尾"死"的主題。

「沒有人能自全，沒有人是孤島，
每人都是大陸的一片，要為本土應卯。
那便是一塊土地，那便是一方海角，
那便是一座莊園，不論是你的、還是朋友的，
一旦海水沖走，歐洲就要變小。
任何人的死亡，都是我的減少，
做為人類的一員，我與生靈共老，
喪鐘在為誰敲，我本茫然不曉，
不為幽明永隔，它正為你哀悼。」

No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe;
every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;
if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea,
Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were,
as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were;
