If I had anything to say to the aspiring witch or witch newbie, only a few suggestions come to mind.
Magick comes in all different religions, traditions, practices, and beliefs. There is no best religion to learn, and there is no right beliefs one must adopt to learn the Art. Whether you are neopagan or Christian, magick can be learned and applied in your life. Do not allow religious politics to override your desire to learn magick. Don't get caught up in "whose Christian or not" to be a witch. It simply doesn't matter.
All magickal traditions or esoteric orders have valuable information and knowledge, however, there is no one magickal tradition that knows everything about magick. My best advice is to study various magickal traditions, such as Santeria/Vodoun, Ceremonial Magick, pre-Christian cultural belief in spirits and deities, Wicca, Chaos magick, Satanism, ect to get a feel for how magick has been practiced cross-cultural, from past to modern times.
Practicing various traditions and methods is a good way to gain personal experience with magick, but do your own homework and make sure what you are doing is really necessary or risky. Making flying ointments, for example, are extremely dangerous and contain many toxic herbs. Likewise, is it really necessary to make a flying ointment to astrally project? Question everything, and do lots of research.
It takes time, patience, introspection, and lots of research to truly find out if a religion or tradition is best for you. Many religions and traditions look appealing and romantic at first sight, but only time will tell if the path really suits you individually. The best thing you can do is read about something as much as you can before jumping head first into something that looks interesting at first sight.
