The Spokane Indians (Children of the Sun) By: Robert H. Ruby and John A. Brown Page 230
The allotment system, a reality for the Spokane Reservation
by the act of June 19, 1902, would, in Webster's thinking, bring its
people into contact with the law-abiding white community. (12) The
Spokanes had already made contracts with certain law-abiding members
of the white community, men like John Hill, Henry Etu, and J.C.
Wynecoop. Wynecoop and his half-blood lake wife, Nancy--a woman
blessed with intelligence, ambition, and physical strengh--moved onto
the reservation.
Here they carved out a sizable domain, leaving descendants well endowned with more than average ambition. (13) (12) Ibid (13)
There were a half-dozen whites of French extraction married to Coeur d' Alene women on their reservation, as they had likewise married Spokane women on thiers.
On the Coeur d' Alene, the French and Irish bloods were generally regarded by many whites as scheming, lazy, and degraded.Webster Davis, Acting Secretary of the Interior, to commissioner, August 20, 1898, Coeur d' Alene Agency Records, Letterbox 18. They had lived on the Coeur d' Alene before the government dealt with the Coeur d' Alenes in 1887, making an agreenment which provided that no white man could come upon that reservation to marry a woman of the tribe without first producing a certificate of good moral character. Page 232
On May 12, 1907, Hunt submitted a list of 149 receiving allotments (a few of which were suspended by the commissioner after review).
Four days later, Webster sent the commissioner an application for the adoption into the tribe of John Hill, a white man who had married a spokane woman in 1877.
Hill had settled on the land in 1877 before its inclusion in the
reservation and afterward had continued to reside there, Cultivating
160 acres.
The tribal leaders approved Hill's adoption into the tribe
in an unprecedented action, probably saving the Interior Department
the problem of having to deal with him.
His Indian children, however, were entitled to allotments and forthcoming benefits for the tribe. (16) (16)
" Proceedings of the Council of the Spokane Indians held at
Colville Agency June 7 and 8, 1907," typed copy in Colville Agency
Records, Box 22546-L. 9179. Page 256
While exchanges of allotments were being effected to solve certain school problems, which gave the school 48 3/4 acres, John Hill, who had an allotment not far north of Klaxta, planned to plat his own place into townsite to be called "Rapid City", named for the Columbia River rapids nearby.
Hill had no doubt been motivated in his plans by Great Northern grading for a spur line from the Big Bend down Hawk Creek to within two miles of Klaxta.

55. Adelaide BARNABE
NOTES:
Birth: Batch & Sheet Number: 8940304 3
Source Call Number: 1553595
RECORDS: Adelaide Barnabe (1838-
Adelaide, eldest recorded child of Joesph Barnabe and Isabelle Boucher, married Joesph Roussin in 1855 at St. Louis. Two months earlier the same register the birth of a daughter Felicite, "born the 9 of this month (June) outside of marriage to George Herren (Heron) and Adeline Barnabe of the parish of St. Paul."George Heron a cousin of sorts of Adelaide, was generally considered unreliable and something of a scamp. What became of Felicite is not recorded, nor is the death of Adelaide. Her later life appears to have been spent in Idaho or Montana. Some confusion results to searchers of records between the above Adelaide, daughter of Joesph Barnabe, and Adelaide Marguerite (Adeline), daughter of Francois Barnabe, who married Joesph Pin (sometimes written Parr) at Walla Walla in 1859.
RECORDS:
Marriage of Joseph Roussin and Adelaide Barnabe The 20 September, 1855, after the publication of three banns of marriage made at the sermon of our parish masses of St. Louis three consecutive Sundays between Joseph Roussin of the parish of St. Louis of the Willamette, of age son of Sieur Roussin domicile on Lake Superior and of Marguerite Souille domicile in Umpqua, County, Oregon, on the one part; and Adelaide Barnabe, of age daughter and legitimate of Joseph Barnabe and Isabelle Bouche of the same parish, formerly domicile in the parish of St. Paul on the other part; no impediment being discovered, we undersigned parish priest of St. Louis have received their mutual consent to marriage and have given them the benediction in the presence of Louis Aussan, Antoine Gregoire, Demien Ledoux and Marguerite Gagnon; the last two have signed with us. Joseph was the son of Sieur Roussin of Lake Superior and of Marguerite Souilliere, who later married David Dompierre. The boy remained with his mother; in 1855 he married Adelaide Barnabe at St. Louis.Years later, the family recalls,"Joe Rosa" appeared at the funeral of "Grandma Pariseau" (Marie Dompierre), saying he would pay the funeral expense, since "he was her half-brother, and had never done anything for her"

[ Acts made at Fort of the Lakes, on the Columbia ] This 17 October, 1838, we priest undersigned have baptized George, aged 4 years and a half natural child of Francis Harren [sic] Chief Factor, and of Josephte Boucher. Godfather Etienne Fortier who has not known how to sign.
Mod. Demers, priest, Miss.
RECORDS:
George Heron himself said he had been born at Fort Nisqually in 1834, son of Francis Heron. "My mother's name was Clarke". His mother, Josephte, was called Boucher from the name of her step-father. George claimed to have been employed by the United States Government as interpreter for many years and spokesman for the tribes in Washington. He had also farmed in the Willamette Valley and had run a pack train between Fort Colville and the Dalles. Dr. McKinley's called him bluntly, in his youth, "a Blackguard...who does not know his prayers".
During his French Prairie years he had a daughter Felicite by Adelaide Barnabe. Later he married an un-named Indian woman, by who he had a number of children.
After his wife's death in 1876, he married "Martine, Indian". George
was still living in 1915, keen of memory, although blind, and able to dictate the story of his life, perhaps somewhat embellished. (See
