1854.....Probably buried in Davis County, but no proof. William must
have married Nancy ? in Davis County, because there is no record in
Taylor County. The youngest child, William is Nancy and William's
child. Not Elizabeth's. (WBK) RECORDS: From the "1990 Taylor County
History" . "About 1856 they all came up the Mississippi River on a
floating mill, owned by St. Clair's half brother, BRYANT SEABOLT.
Seabolt's daughter married a McCurdy. They stoped at every town along
the way to grind corn for people. When they came to Iowa border, the
Cade family got off and landed in Davis County. They (St. Clair
Cade's Family) moved to Taylor County." This was written by Zula Webb
Reynolds. Grandaughter of Elba Baker and St.Clair Cade, Elba Baker
is Elizabeth Baker's younger sister. If this is true, Bryant Seabolt
would have only 18 years of age, and his parents were already in
Taylor county. Maybe, she ment brother-in law, not half brother.
Maybe the year is wrong. I am not sure. William Seabolt's daughter,
not Bryants, Easter Seabolt did marry Franklin McCurdy. (WBK) I
think William Seabolt and St. Clair Cade were half brothers. Can't
prove it yet!!! !Children of WILLIAM SEABOLT and ELIZABETH BAKER

Also in the same area were a John, Jesse, Kinsey, David, Littlebury and James. From the "History of Taylor County", 1981: (note, Jabez's name is written as Jacob)
They came to Davis County, Iowa in 1850. In 1856 they settled in Taylor County on the land that now joins Gravity on the south and west. They came to Taylor County by ox team. This was open country at that time and Maryville, Missouri was their closest post office, 36 miles away. They spent the rest of their lives here and endured all the hardships of the frontier. There was no town of Gravity and a store was started in Holt Township later. A cemetery was started in Holt Township later and was to be financed by tax levy. There are a lot of Taylor County's older settlers buried there. There was never a town by the name of Holt, just Holt Store and Cemetery.
Submitted by Alvin Moore to be put in the History of Taylor County in 1990. (WBK)

IT WAS TAKEN BY J. G. MOORE OF DENVER. YESTERDAY, THE TARGET BEING
HIS OWN HEART.
The artical tells how he and his wife had divorced, and he had their
son. His sister Mrs. Elizabeth Cadle, along with her family had moved
into the house of her brother. After a short time, he became
dissatified with the arrangment, and ask her to leave. When she left,
he went to her house and accused her of taking some of his things, and
asulted her. After being fined for carrying a concealed weapons and
creating a disturbance, he went home, had dinner then went upstairs
and shot himself. According to the paper, he was around 38 years of
age, which would have made him born in 1846.
I do have a copy of this artical.(WBK)
His stone in the Holt Cemetery has the following.
J. G. Moore
Died
March 6, 1884
Age 44 years 9 months
and 18 days
Taken from the Taylor County Report: Jabez Moore died Denver
Colorado. Interred at Holt Cem. March 13, 1884
From Robert Bromley to Katherne Higgins of Bedford, Iowa. Robert
died in 1993, rather Old.(WBK)
"Now let me tell you about Jabez's son Jabez (the younger) and his
son James Monroe, my great-grandfather. They did indeed go down into
Colorado to the gold mines summer of 1860. An uncle and a cousin from
Va. were already down in Running Creek, gold hunting. So the two
brothers, also with John Cade, Alatha L. Moore, married a Cade, went
down to the excitement. They wandered all over Colorado, and part of
Kansas, herding Cattle, chopping wood, and no doubt looking for gold.
The two brothers made a couple of trips, and then in 1875, James got
married in Bedford, Iowa. Her name was Elizabeth Chauvet, one the
marriage certificate is given Lizzie Shavey. In Taylor Co., her
father and mother were known as Pete and Cathering Cavey - her
brothers and sisters as Shave - Shavey - Shavy - Chavy. (several ways
to spell that name, if you couldn't read or write) In 1880, under
their different names, there were more Chauvets than Moores inTaylor
Co.
In 1880, Jabez (the younger) and James and his wife Elizabeth and my
baby grandmother, Etha Mae Moore, went down to Colorado Springs where
the Moore relatives had moved from Running Springs and Gold Hill.
Jabez (the younger) left. (probably for Denver)
When James Monroe Moore died in LaJunta, Co., quite a few Colo.
newspapers printed long obituaries about the Pioneer Coloradan who had
come in 1869, and built a cattle empire east of the Springs, in El
Paso County. He really hadn't, nor had Jabez./ There is not one
single tax record about either brother buying or sellin any cows.
However, the brothers did herd a lot of cattle, and chop and sell
wood.
In the copy of the divorce, granted Sept. 1879 Colorado Springs:
Jabez got it bacause a year before, his wife IDA, had taken off to
Gunnison, taking their daughter along, but not their son, Walter D.
Moore. The name of the daughter is not given. Ida and Jabez had been
married for four years at the time of the "desertation"--- for which
the divorce was granted.
A copy of the divorce document itself was not found, but the court
records granting same. Probably the document itself got lost 1884,
right after the death of Jabez, when Ida sued to set the divorce
aside so she could get the estate. The Court records are from both
Colorado Springs and Denver but Colo. Springs granted her suit, but
the higher court in Denver overturned it. So if Ida got anthing, it
had to be in the will." Dated June 30, 1990.
Robert Bromley also belives that Lovell's mother was Prudence
Beareyes, a Cherokee. He belived that his father was Isaac Baker, not
Richard Baker. (just a note about how many hours he had worked on the
Baker's, and tryed to find a family line back in Tenn., and Va., (WBK)

Morning Ann Died in Worth Co., Mo. in 1890, at the age of 76. (?

I don't think this is right, because she would have been 26 to have
her first child and over 50 when her last child when she was over 50.
Perhaps Richard Burrell ment that she was 67 and not 76. (WBK)
My aunt Dean who is in her 80's says that she remembers her
grandfather telling her that "my mother was part Indain, and her name
was Morning Ann. She was a great cook, and spent most of her time
cooking with the big family of children and grandchildren." This
could be true, because where she was born, in the north east of Tenn.,
and southwest part of Va., there were many Cherokee and Melungeon's.
If it can be proven that Lovell's mother was Mary Mullins, she may
have been a Melungeon, many of the Mullins fron the Appalachian
wilderness are Melungeon's. (for E-Mailers:

CIVAL WAR: Elihu was a private with the "B" Fourth Battalion,
Southern Border Brigade.
Instructions were sent to R.A. Moser, of Lexington, Taylor County,
with reference to this brigade.
Sept. 11, 1962. A tatal of 97 men from Taylor County were duly
enrolled.
According to the "History of Taylor Co." 1941. Page 539.
"The men are enlisted to act as mounted men when their services are
needed, and each man must furnish his own horse, saddle, bridle,
blankets and clothing. It is not intended these men should all be on
constant service. A few men from each company will daily act as
scouts, and the others are to be at home holding themselves as minute
men."
"There seems to have occured no disturbance in this county of
sufficient note to warrant an official communication to the
adjutant-general relative thereto, as actually was the case in
Fremont, Ringold, Van Buren and Davis Counties. Intense excitement ,
at times swept over the county, but nothing of real warlike character
ever occured."

Notes for ANDREW BAKER:
There are two different Andrew Baker's, both born in Tenn., and both
born in the year of 1848. In an Obit for one Andrew Jackson Baker,
born May 7, 1948 in Tenn., it has his wife listed as Sarah Christinia,
having 12 Children and is buried in Hawleyville Cemetery. But my
records show that OUR Andrew was married to Elizabeth Cain, and I do
not show records that his name was Andrew Jackson, only Andrew!! He
and his wife are burried in Isadora. (Wilma Baker Konieczny)

Notes for ST. CLAIR LOVELL CADE:
Information on St. Clair and Elbia Cade by Willy Baker Konieczny.
From the 1990 TAYLOR COUNTY HISTORY:
Parents of eleven children, 3 born in Virginia. They moved to
Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. 5 children born there.
"St. Clair Cade walked 5 miles through timber (no roads) and mauled
out 100 rails a day. One time he was walking home when a witch
stopped him and whispered something in his ear. She warned him never
to tell anyone, or else something would happen to his family. After
that she made a " + " on his shirt collar that couldn't be washed out.
Elba sheared the sheep, washed the wool, carded the wool, spun the
wool, made the cloth, made the clothing for all. She took care of the
patch of corn to grind for cornbread, mush and apncakes. St. Clair
built a log cabin with a fireplace where hung a large iron kettle.
They had wild turkeys and deer to eat. Elba would take the children
to the creek where she washed cloths. She had to watch the children.
Missed one, went to look for it, and found the child in a very large
rotted tree, playing in the dust. Above the child a copperhead snake
ready to strike the child on the top of the head. She grabbed the
child, scared the snake and it pulled back. So many poisonous snakes.
Copperhead, cotton mouth, rattlesnakes. No screen doors and screen
over the windows. A rattlesnake bit one of the children, a pet
chicken was walking over the floor, she grabbed it, tore it apart,
placed the warm bloody part over the bit place, and saved the child's
life.
The logs in the cabins didn't fit down against each other good, so
clay was put there. When dry, the clay would fall out. One time at
night a rattlesnake came up over the bed where St.Clair and Elba with
2 small children were sleeping. They both grabbed a child and jumped
out of bed. St.Clair killed the snake.
In 1856 they all came up the Mississippi River on a floating mill,
owned by St.Clair's half brother, Bryant Seabolt. Seabolt's daughter
married a McCurdy. They stopped at every town along the way to grind
corn for people. When they came to the Iowa border, the Cade family
got off and landed in Davis County, Iowa. They moved to Taylor
County. 3 children born there on 40 acre.
At the beginning of the Civil War, 1861, three oldest boys enlisted
in the 29th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry, mustered in at
Hawleyville, Iowa. James, Benjamin and Elbert. Elbert wasn't 17
years old yet. Elba begged and cried and asked elbert not to go. She
said she wouldn't get to see him again, that he never would get back
home. He reassured her he would be back. Elba was expecting her 10
child in about 6 weeks, was one of the reasons she felt so bad.
Elbert never got to cme home. He died in camp at Little Rock,
Arkansas and is buried there.
This artical was submitted by Zula Webb Reynolds.
Elba died at 70 years of age and StClair died at 77, both in Taylor
County, Iowa. (WBK)
