2000 years ago... they didn't have Playstation 2s, so its lucky somebody wrote this down, otherwise we'd have missed out on one of the greatest stories of all time. The Dark Knight Sparda, a hero of the past who thwarted the evil Mundus, has a son, Dante who will now take up the fight. Mundus is back, and in a typically evil fashion wants to expand the underworld and engulf what we know as earth, which is a shame as many of us were getting quite fond of it.
Basically, its villain bashing time, but it is set apart from other games of its kind by the fact that when you fight, you feel cool. It doesn`t matter if you're the kind of person who prefers sitting down wearing your pyjamas, eating a peanut butter sandwich and contemplating which is your favourite type of wallpaper, whoever you are and whatever you do, one thing is for sure, when you play this game, you WILL feel cool.

Capcom, being one of the most experienced developers in this genre, never looked as if they were going to make anything but a classic with Devil May Cry, and now that its arrived, its clear to see that they haven`t put a foot wrong. The game had been talked about since the early days of the PS2, and the game has lived up to the enormous amount of hype that built before its release.
The ultra smooth controls allow for precision fighting, as well as tight control of your character as you move around the level. Its easy to get frustrated with control systems that are sloppy or slow, and Capcom have completely avoided this, dropping the Resident Evil controls in favour of the Final Fantasy style of movement (left analog stick to move around the screen).
The moves Dante is capable of (particularly towards the end) are quite awe inspiring. One move that will stay in every player's mind is the upper cut, shoot combo. Basically you flick enemies into the air with your sword, and then keep them there by firing your guns into them from below. Sounds a little over the top perhaps, but once you've started the game, you soon see how fast the action takes place.
Throughout the game, there are "minions" to fight, each having a range of abilities, and typically attacking in great numbers, making a lot of the fights quite tactically interesting. However, the most exciting part of the levels is the "boss" fight. If you make it through the game on your first run through without a single defeat at the hands of a boss, then you deserve a trophy for it. The bosses are a real challenge, and show surprisingly stong AI, unlike the irritatingly predicatable bosses found in many other games.

Its not just the fantastic gameplay details that make this game so great, its also its visuals. Graphically it is in the same league as Metal Gear Solid 2, which is something not a lot of games can claim. Superb lighting effects and smooth character animations are but a few of the fine touches that make the graphics so good. Each level is beautifully designed, making areas such as the castle feel completely authentic. The water in later levels is also carefully done. In many games, underwater sections can be a disaster, but Devil May Cry pulls it off surprisingly well.

So, it looks great, and plays well, but what is it that makes it so cool? Well, the music plays a huge part in it, reacting to your current situation and altering from pleasant background tunes with ambient noise into an upbeat ear-pounding rythm during battles. The theme tunes and in game music are second to none in video games.
Similarly, the sound effects such as weapons fire noises, sword swishes, footsteps as well as the voice overs are all successfully implemented, making the game a success in both the audio and visual categories. Even the menu transition noises ooze with medievil style.

If you're sad that Resident Evil has moved to Nintendo, then try this game to see that Capcom still love PS2 owners. Devil May Cry is perhaps the best action title around, and makes the perfect alternative to MGS2.

You could also check out Resident Evil: Code Veronica, for more Capcom genius. Slower paced than Devil May Cry, Resident Evil concentrates more on building atmosphere and uses more subtle techniques to build fear.
