    Full Review:
Tricky is here! Wahoo! Great news - made even better if you bought Tony Hawks 3 or Half-Life the same day. What a day in the life of Playstation 2! Three massive titles released together in the lead up to Christmas 2001. SSX was a big success at the launch of Playstation 2, and was probably the best of all the launch titles. Now, with an extra year of PS2 developement under their belts, EA Big return with SSX Tricky.
    Gameplay
First of all, what makes it different from the original? SSX was a fantastic game with little room for improvement, so what exactly has been changed? Here are a few of the major differences you'll encounter:

    1) Alaska - Of the two completely new courses, this one is easily the best. Garibaldi is nice, and provides a perfect course for beginners, but its a little short, and doesn`t have nearly enough complexity to the jumps. It does look nice, but Alaska has it easily beaten for both speed and jumps. It can be a little overwhelming at first, as you haven`t got a clue how to get down the course the way YOU want to, rather than letting the course take you the way IT wants to. However, the speed, trick, grind and short cut potentials are amazing, making this a great addition. Put in the hours, and the course can become extremely rewarding.

    2) Uber Moves - Woah! These are something else! If you wanted a reason to choose Tricky over Tony Hawks, then this is it. These moves look absolutely brilliant. You're cruising down a slope, snowflakes being lightly sprayed aside by your board, you build up a full adrenaline bar, and up up comes the music... "Its Tricky...". Reaching the next big jump, you prepare for Uber glory... up goes your character into the sky, you push the right buttons, and suddenly it happens - your rider starts pulling off ludicrous moves such as twirling their board above their heads, or lying down on the board, all of which require them to detach their feet from the straps. Amazing!

Uber tricks are a major part of the package. The easiest way to win a race is to do 6 Uber moves, thus filling all 6 letters in the word "Tricky". This gives you infinite adrenaline, which you can use to boost your speed, allowing you to cruise to victory. This means its not just about racing anymore, there is a realy emphasis on the tricks as this is a great way to build speed.

    3) Tokyo Megaplex - This is probably my least favourite course in the original game (due to its slightly gimmicky nature), but its had major rennovation, making it the Rubiks Cube of all the courses. It might not have quite the same points potential as the new pipedream course, but it is by far the most 3-dimensional of all the courses. Multiple levels give the course an edge over the competition, as its unlikely you`ll ever take the same route twice!

Also, new characters, each with their own story, have been added. Joining old favourites like Zoe, Elise and Moby are newcomers including Eddie an afro sporting young man with the desire to hurl himself off cliffs. Each character has their own selection of outfits, boards and tricks to unlock and complete, making the depth of gameplay impressive.

Though there isn't a huge amount to seperate this from the original, its nice to see that EA Big recognised what was good about the original, and managed to change things for the better. It would have been a terrible shame if things had been changed for worse, causing the series to stop in its tracks.

    Graphics
There are many subtle differences such as the improved character animation, the smoother graphics, the total lack of any slowdown, and an improved two player game. Also, each of the courses, even the old ones, are much longer than before. Where snowdream could be completed in under 2 minutes before, it takes nearer 3 now, an impressive change, demonstrating how much the graphics engine has been improved, even over this course, one of the shortest in the game. When you take on Alaska, you're in for a long, but exciting ride.

The main graphical improvements though, apart from the size of the courses, are the details on each course. Each level seems more alive, with far more depth to every structure, more texture to every backdrop, more energy to every special effect. It makes a big difference when you're travelling down a mountain that really feels like its aware of your presence.

    Sound
SSX owed part of its success to its fantastic sound package - cool reactive music, sublime sound effects and decent voices. Tricky takes this one step further, and includes voices from celebrities. These give each character a little more personality, something which the game tries to focus on more. Characters form alliances and rivalries as the contest progresses, meaning you could be in for a shock when boarding too close to an enemy. With voices from people like Macy Gray, you know you need to stay away from certain characters. To finish off, there is also a nice jukebox in the extras which allows you to listen to all the in-game music whenever you like. I think this is a nice addition, well worth using if you like that kind of music.
    Overall
If you`re looking for an extreme sports game, a snowboarding game, or even just a game in general, then this would not be a bad choice. Its superb gameplay, fantastic moves, impressive graphics and brilliant levels of fun make this one of the best games on PS2.

    Lastability
More to do, but easy for previous SSX users.

    Overall
A nice sequel, but nothing majorly new. Still loads of fun!
    9.4
    Alternatively:
You could also check out Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3, for a different kind of extreme sport. Take away the snow, but add wheels for a more addictive experience, based around combo creation rather than single extreme moves.
