This picture represents the spirit of Scouting.
The scout's were called on to provide a flag ceremony for a Rec. Day. Always trying to help, the Scouts responded with a resounding Yes.
The boys in the picture have practiced a flag raising ceremony. They had rehearsed a color guard ceremony complete with posting and raising the colors. Weather reports called for thunderstorms and generally nasty weather. The scouts were determined they would carry through no matter what. With raincoats at the ready, they showed up.
The regular flag used for the event was not to be found. The Scouts, always prepared, provided one.
A quick conference with the event organizers indicated they had intended for the national anthem to play while raising the flag. The scouts requested to be allowed to recite the pledge to allow a better ceremony.
After getting the honor of leading the parade, they proceeded to the field. Since there were a few minutes before ceremonies on the field, the scouts checked to ensure everything was ready.
Near disaster occurred when the vandalized flagpole was discovered. The rope need to hoist the flag was missing. These boys would not be deterred. In true scouting fashion, they agreed to carry the flag out to the field and HOLD it in the air for the ceremony.
The wind was strong as evidenced by the flag flowing. The 2nd year webelo in the picture held the flag steady in the air for the entire ceremony. His only comment about the ordeal was that he did what need to be done.
When the scouts began reciting the Pledge, the entire crowd enthusiastically joined them. The singing of the national Anthem further inspired the crowd. The scouts, when exiting the field, were earnestly cheered by the waves of Patriotism flowing freely around.
