Drum Consecration Ritual

©2000 by Mareth SummerWind

This is Lizzy, my new ritual partner. I bought her on-line thru a company called Rainbows and Moonbeams. Lizzy is an African doumbek, made by women in Nicaragua. She's beautiful and has a spectacular sound that, one day, I hope to do justice.

  • Altar Devotion

  • Cast Circle, saying,
"By the powers of Land, Sky, and Sea,
By the power that flows within me,
By the power of three times three,
Sacred Circle, I do conjure thee.
And as I will, so mote it be!"

  • Invitation to the Quarters:
    • EAST: "Hail, Mighty Falcon, Element of Air, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Eastern Quadrant. I invite you forth this night as I consecrate my drum, that I might play for you. Welcome."

    • SOUTH: "Hail, Mighty Fox, Element of Fire, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Southern Quadrant. I invite you forth this night as I consecrate my drum, that I might play for you. Welcome."

    • WEST: "Hail, Mighty Mare, Element of Water, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Western Quadrant. I invite you forth this night as I consecrate my drum, that I might play for you. Welcome."

    • NORTH: "Hail, Mighty Wolf, Element of Earth, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Northern Quadrant. I invite you forth this night as I consecrate my drum, that I might play for you. Welcome."

  • Invocation of Deity:
"Blessed Bast, Mighty Cat Goddess, I invite you forth this night to ask your blessing as I consecrate my drum. May it bring joy and much dancing as I learn to play. Welcome."

  • Introduction of the drum. It is raised with both hands as the following is spoken:
    • Standing facing EAST: Mighty Falcon, Element of Air, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Eastern Quadrant, I present to you… Lizzy, my partner as I learn to drum. I ask your blessings upon it and upon my quest."

    • SOUTH: Mighty Fox, Element of Fire, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Southern Quadrant, I present to you… Lizzy, my partner as I learn to drum. I ask your blessings upon it and upon my quest."

    • WEST: Mighty Mare, Element of Water, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Western Quadrant, I present to you… Lizzy, my partner as I learn to drum. I ask your blessings upon it and upon my quest."

    • NORTH: Mighty Wolf, Element of Earth, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Northern Quadrant, I present to you… Lizzy, my partner as I learn to drum. I ask your blessings upon it and upon my quest."

    • CENTER: Blessed Bast, I present to you… Lizzy, my partner as I learn to drum. Rain down your blessings upon it and upon my quest, for I do this in honor of You."

  • Consecration of the Drum:
    • Place the drum on the Altar.

    • Pick up the censer and pass it around the drum, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of Air."

    • Pick up the fire candle and pass it VERY CAREFULLY around the drum, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of Fire."

    • Pick up the water vessel and pass it around the drum, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of Water."

    • Pick up the earth vessel and pass it around the drum, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of Air."

    • Pick up the drum with both hands and raise it to the Heavens, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of my Spirit."

    • Blow your breath into the interior of the drum, saying, "I consecrate you, Lizzy, by the power of sacred breath."

  • Drumming and general merrymaking

  • Thanks to Bast: "Beloved Bast, I thank You for the blessings You've brought this evening. Thank you for the care and love of my companions, who are ever in Your care. Go if You must, stay if You like. Blessed Bast, Hail and Farewell."

  • Farewell to the Quarters:
    • NORTH: "Mighty Wolf, Element of Earth, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Northern Quadrant. Thank you for coming tonight. I enjoyed playing for you. May this be only the first of many experiences we shall share. Go if you must, stay if you like. Hail and Farewell."

    • WEST: "Mighty Mare, Element of Water, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Western Quadrant. Thank you for coming tonight. I enjoyed playing for you. May this be only the first of many experiences we shall share. Go if you must, stay if you like. Hail and Farewell."

    • SOUTH: "Mighty Fox, Element of Fire, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Southern Quadrant. Thank you for coming tonight. I enjoyed playing for you. May this be only the first of many experiences we shall share. Go if you must, stay if you like. Hail and Farewell."

    • EAST: "Mighty Falcon, Element of Air, and all ye benevolent Faery Folk of the Eastern Quadrant. Thank you for coming tonight. I enjoyed playing for you. May this be only the first of many experiences we shall share. Go if you must, stay if you like. Hail and Farewell."

  • Pull up Circle, saying,
"The Earth will crumble my Circle,
Water will cause it to fall.
Fire will burn what's left in the urn.
And the Winds will scatter it all."†
