Chemistry Projects
There will be four required projects (1 per nine weeks)
during the course of the school year. These projects are to be done outside of
class (I will give you advice and suggestions during class, but will not devote
class time to them). Most will require the use of the Internet. I will
provide some links to get you started. (If you find any other excellent links,
please email them to me). No late projects will be accepted.

- Grading
Due October 7, 2003
Choose a career in the field of chemistry and produce a report (or PowerPoint
presentation) which includes the following information :
- Responsibilities or duties of the chemist.
- Working environment and places of employment.
- Educational background required - degree number of years of college,
experience etc.
- Average salaries for the position.
- Any other information you find which helps you to understand the
requirements and benefits of a career in chemistry.
- Include sources of information.

Due December 9, 2003
Write a report or produce a PowerPoint presentation on an element (must be
different than other classmates) and include the following :
- When, by whom and how the element was discovered.
- Name and symbol for the element and their origin (Greek, Latin etc.,
include meaning).
- Basic information about the element :
- atomic number and atomic mass
- atomic structure - number of protons, neutrons, electrons
- isotopes
- physical properties - state, boiling point, density etc. (at least 5
properties).
- Uses and importances of the element (industrial, health etc.).
- Where the element can be found in nature (ores, minerals etc.).
- Includes sources of information (bibliography-see http://www.apa.org/journals/webref.html
).

Due March 3, 2004.
Choose a household chemical (cleaner, food additive, type of medicine etc.)
and make a report (or produce a PowerPoint presentation) which includes :
- Name of chemical.
- Chemical formula and structure of the chemical.
- Use of the chemical.
- Chemical nature and activity of the chemical which allows it to perform
its function.
- Dangers of the chemical - use, storage etc..

stuff? - consumer chemistry from Chemical Engineering and News
Due May 12, 2004.
Collect and report on at least five news articles which contain information
about chemistry, chemicals or chemists. News articles cannot be more than three
months old. The journal should include :
- The original article (or a photocopy).
- The key points of the article should be underlined or highlighted and
unknown terms defined in the margin or below article.
- A completed and detailed news article summary sheet on each article.
- Grading rubric here.
The grade received will be based on the accuracy and completeness of the
information based on the above requirements and on neatness ( typing,
appropriate use of color etc). If additional information (that is pertinent) is
added it will also be considered in the final grade of the project. See the
grading rubrics for each project for more specific information.
Each project is worth 100 points.
