Biology 1-2 Class Policies

Mr. Runyon 2001-2002

The paramount rule in this classroom is RESPECT. This means:

    * Students will treat the teacher and each other with respect.

    * The teacher will treat the students with respect.

    * Students will treat the property of other students, the teacher, and the school with respect.

Failure to comply with the rules above and/or any policies listed below will be dealt with as follows (depending on the severity of the offense):

    1. The student and teacher will have a conference.

    2. The teacher will call the student's parent/guardian.

    3. Appropriate office referrals will be written

    4. Action will be taken to remove the student from the class.

Things to bring to class

The following items are to be brought to class daily:

1. Notebook (3-ring binder with paper)

2. Writing instrument (pencil or blue/black pen)

Notebook

1. Notebooks will be collected and graded about once a month. The notebook will be worth about 15% of the total grade in the class.

2. A list of things that are to be included in the notebook will be handed out about 1 week before the notebook is collected.

3. Notebooks that are of the wrong type or not sorted out will not be accepted.

Assignment Policies

1. Classroom assignments and homework assignments are to be completed by the student without the help of other students unless the teacher specifies it is permissible to do so.

    * If the student is caught receiving unauthorized help from other students both students will receive a "0" for the assignment and an office referral will be written.

2. Assignments are to be submitted on or before the due date specified. Late work will be penalized 50% of the points possible for the assignment.

3. There will be no "group work" on classroom assignments unless specifically authorized by the teacher.

Test Policies

1. All tests are announced several days in advance. Therefore students present on the day of a test will take the test. Being absent the day before the test does not excuse the student from taking the test.

2. If a student misses a test, he/she will be expected to take the test the day he/she returns.

3. A test can be retaken by a student within one week of the original test date.

    * The average of the two scores will be recorded in the grade book.

        Example: Fred scores a 50 on the first test and a 90 on the second test. Fred will end up with a score of 70.

Tardy Policy

1. Students will be allowed three tardies during a SEMESTER without any action being taken.

2. On the fourth tardy, and for all tardies after that, the student will be expected to complete a writing assignment as soon as he/she comes into the classroom.

    * The writing assignment must be completed before the student will be allowed to participate in the classroom activity.

    * Failure/refusal to complete the writing assignment will result in an office referral.

Makeup Policy

1. If a student misses class the day an assignment is due, he/she must turn in the assignment at the beginning of class on the first day he/she returns.

2. Students will have one week to make up anything missed during his/her absence.

3. In the case of long-term projects, the teacher may modify the above policy.

Hall Pass Policy

1. Hall passes are not given out while the teacher is addressing the class.

2. Each student is limited to six hall passes per SEMESTER.

    * No hall passes will be given once the student has used his/her six for the semester.

3. Any abuse of a hall pass (taking too long, taking "side trips", not arriving at the appropriate destination) will result in a suspension of hall pass privileges.

4. Any unused hall passes at the end of the semester will be converted into extra credit.

Computer Policy

The computers in this classroom are for school use only. Any misuse or vandalism will be dealt with severely. More information will be provided in another handout.

Grading Policies

The grading scale is a standard 90-80-70-60 scale

A= 90% of total points possible or higher

B= 80-89%

C=70-79%

D=60-69%

The approximate breakdown of points is:

Tests     50%

Homework/Labs    35%

Notebook    15%
