--chapter one - page seven--

They watched Aaron’s concert from backstage, in the wings. As much as she loved the pop music scene, Lalaine had never been to a concert before. Malu on the other hand had never heard Aaron Carter’s music, let alone she him perform. Admittedly, she wasn’t a fan. Why would she be? Aaron’s music went beyond the cheesiness of Britney or Backstreet. Parts were painful for Malu to listen to. But nevertheless, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from the peppy little blonde boy. No doubt he was charismatic. But his similarities with Nick were strikingly alarming. The facial expressions, the way they talked- all exactly the same. Would her child inherit these traits as well?

Nick joined Aaron onstage for the encore. It was really the first time Malu had seen him perform as well, other then in music videos. It was fascinating: the man who could be so shy and unsure of himself around Malu was completely at ease on stage in front of thousands. Nick shone when he was onstage. Suddenly Malu realized why he made all those little girls scream. He was captivating.

Even more captivating was the relationship between Nick and Aaron. Though eight years difference between the two, none of that seemed to matter. They kidded and played around with each other. The room could feel the brotherly love between the two. It created a yearning feeling deep within Malu: she wanted her baby to have that opportunity to bond with a sibling. But that would mean she’d have to have sex again, something both Malu and Nick had sworn off.

“My brother Nick has some sort of surprise announcement for you all,” Aaron announced. The crowd cheered. “I don’t even know what it is- so we’re going to hear it for the first time together.”

Nick took his microphone to his mouth. “That’s right. I wanted you all-“

He paused, pointing out at the audience. The high-pitched screams escalated as each girl in the audience swore the Backstreet Boy was pointing directly at her. “…to be the first to know.”

Nick turned to the side, motioning Malu out of the wings. Cautiously, she made her way onto the stage. Standing next to Nick, the two smiled at one another. Nick wrapped his arm affectionately around her waist, before returning to the mic. “I wanted to introduce you all to my girlfriend, Malu, whom I love very much.”

Camera flashes abuzz. “And let you know that we’re very proud to announce that in six months, we’re going to have a baby of our own.”

Nick caught his mother’s eye, who was standing offstage with Lalaine. She was definitely surprised. And not happy.
