A concrete noun names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell. |
| Memory aid: A concrete noun is tangible--that it, you can put your hand on it! |

| An abstract noun refers to an idea, feeling, characteristic, or quality, such as: |
| patriotism |
| love |
| courage |
| beliefs |
| responsibilty |
| competition |
| sorrow |
| Exercise 6: Create a list of two each nouns that refer to ideas, feelings, characteristics, or qualities. |
| What's the conection? |
| "Courage" is an abstract noun, but one is awarded a medal--a concrete noun--for displaying courage. |
| "Idea" is an abstract noun, but a concrete noun--a light bulb--is used to represent idea. |
| "Love" is an abstract noun, but we often use a heart or Valentine to express this feeling. |
| "Time" is an abstract noun, but we use a clock--a concrete noun to keep track of this concept. |
