August 1998: A group of intrepid travellers set out for the Far East meet from all corners of the globe for the "Explore Worldwide" trip to Thailand - "Hilltribe Trek", little knowing that their excursion in the centuries-old Thai culture would be interspersed with John Denver's "Country Roads Take Me Home" performed by tour leader Chan on acoustic gee-tar.

Having survived the rigours of the 7-day trek and its spacious overnight accommodation, and having been re-united with our surplus luggage at Hot (where it was), we journeyed down-country to soak up the glories of Sukhothai and the savour the splendours of Ayutthya whilst rice-barging it down the Chao Phraya river (temperature reading at 19.10 hours 97F /37C).

Most of the party returned home after this (though a couple were going on to more Exploring in Malaysia), but a lucky few spent a few days on the island of Ko Samet, to "chill out" in unaccustomed luxury.
