If you are interested in education, you should check out the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). With data on half a million students from 41 countries, the TIMSS is the largest, most comprehensive, and most rigorous international study of schools and students ever. See how education in the U.S. compares to other countries. An example: "Our most significant finding is that U.S. 12th grade students do not do well. When our graduating seniors are compared to the students graduating secondary school in other countries, our students rank near the bottom. This holds true in both science and math, and for both our typical and our top-level students."

An alternative view of the TIMSS results can be found at Taking a Reading on TIMSS by Gerald W. Bracey. He contends that "Heres the verdict on the Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) 12th grade report: garbage. For their simplistic and misleading statements, study director Bill Schmidt, NCES Commissioner Pat Forgione, and Secretary of Education Dick Riley should lose all the credibility they enjoyed before this report's release. If this report had been submitted to any refereed professional journal, it would have caused peels of laughter among the reviewers and the submitters would have been asked to give back whatever advanced degrees they possessed."

My Homework Helper

A great collection of links from My Reference Desk. If you are really stuck, be sure to check out Ask The Experts.

Kid's Web

Another good homework helper. Kid's Web goal is to present students with a subset of the Web that is very simple to navigate, and contains information targeted at the K-12 level. Each subject section contains a list of links to information that is understandable and interesting to schoolkids. There are also links to external lists of material on each subject which more advanced students can browse for further information.
