PSB - The Movie: **WHEN THINGS GO WRONG**
The Movie by Me, soundtrack by Pet Shop Boys

1. Later Tonight

It’s a club. People emerge and disappear, overlaying, fading through each
other... while only one remains, at the same corner of the bar, keeping an eye
on another one (who is having a good time quite carelessly, oblivious of anyone
at all). But then the last dance begins, and they face each other at the bar...

2. I Want a Lover.

Invitation, explanation, nonchalantly by one of them (seemingly), concentrated
frown (seemingly) on the face of the other. A cab. The light goes out, and we
get to know how he, the other, felt and feels about it all.

3. We All Feel Better In A Dark

Not exactly what he (the first one) had expected... But it turns out... it can
be like that, too...

Then their time together  - strolling along the streets, walking out in the
parks, chatting, touching half jokingly the things that start getting on their
nerves -

4. 1+1=5.

The conversation seems to end happily, they head home from another bar, to make
love, obviously... but on the way home the other says good-byes to more friends
than his mate can take, and at the door he doesn’t look forward, to see if the
cab is there, but glances behind, with a grin, at someone, who has just slapped
him on his ass...

5. To Face The Truth.

The first one is standing at the window, mixing sugar in his cup of coffee,
while the sun that had hung high above, lowers down and disappears... only then
does he notice that to glance at his watch again, he has to turn on the light.
And he, in turns, lies down then walks back to the window, trying to make out
the cars, coming and going... and the other one is somehow still here... he was
here a moment ago, and now he comes back, now takes off, giving him a casual
little good-bye kiss... and goes away, in a cab, or in a car that has been
waiting for him... And the last words are heard, when, in the morning mist, the
first one’s hand lies on an empty pillow instead of the other’s chest...

6. That's My Impression.

He can’t bear it any more. He knows it’s silly... But he goes looking for
him... He sets off for Hyde Park, because - by the Serpentine... He sees the
other one stroke a girl’s cheek, but when he draws near, the other vanishes,
and the girl greets him with a blank smile - no, I haven’t seen him... The same
happens over and over again, with almost everyone on his way, with an aged man
at the temple, with a glistening boy at the doors of a club of which he’s not a
member... This evasive vanishing image gradually starts getting on his nerves,
and when he suddenly catches sight of the other, the real him - at the window
in their apartment, mixing sugar in a similar manner... apparently, waiting for
another car... And he shouts into his face the very same words as at the
beginning of the race... but he is not heard.... he is casually pushed back to
the bed... the other winds something around the palm of his hand... puts out
the light - "I know what you need, babe"... - an image he, the other, is quite
accustomed to... And in the darkness, the beat goes - one, two, three, and the
crowd cheers loudly...

7. I Want To Wake Up.

In the morning, still half asleep, he smiles, feeling his hand rest, at long
last, on the chest of the other... who’s speaking with someone over the
‘phone... Then the other gets up quietly and goes out. Time to get up. The
morning coffee... the radio in the kitchen... The second cup on the table, the
half-shut door... The other is still here, somehow, he can be suddenly seen at
various spots in the kitchen, with the ‘phone in his hands, smiling at someone
inside the receiver... He seems to be still there, in their bed, where their
mad hot nights go on and on and on....

He gives in. He admits to himself that he feels

8. Jealousy.

He is not prepared to go anywhere, there can be no talk of any bar with a
piano... It’s just a - really - empty apartment, and a really empty bed... he
doesn’t even go to bed, withering at the armchairs, at the sofa, keeping away
from the window... He, the other one, does not even appear here any more, but
his belongings still catch his eye.... And then it seems to him, that it is
himself - there, with the other, he’s trying to step into the shoes of the one
he’s embracing now.... kissing.... torturing, perhaps... but he can’t hold onto
it, he’s pushed out...

Thus the first part ends, and the second begins. We turn the tape around when
it stops somewhere in the middle of Jealousy, and the song resumes from
approximately the same moment on the other side.

He’s trying to move on somehow, given the circumstances. He’s rushing away from
that empty apartment, from the ghost haunting him... There should be a disco
somewhere...

2. Discoteca.

Where he’s trying hard to carry on as normal. And, gradually, he manages it,
and his words in a foreign tongue are almost whispered into the ear of someone
he dances with - until all of a sudden, in the end, he catches sight of him,
the other, in a dark corner. And someone with an exaggerated polite grin,
points to the first one, with his accidental dance partner, and the
concentrated frown freezes over his face... The other one heads for the exit,
the first one rushes after him - but the other finds a cab... It’s morning. And
it's raining...

3. One more chance.

He catches up with the other, everywhere he stops during this journey through
the rain. He begs for his one more chance, receiving a slap in his face,
touching his injured lip softly with the back of his hand and so on... But this
can’t stop him any more. He knows it’s stupid, but... He spreads out his arms,
standing in front of the cab which the other one has just climbed in... And
when his hope is almost gone, he’s suddenly pulled into the cab, the other
slams the door (that’s why his last words "I don’t mind" are muffled...)

4. You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk.

The life goes on. A party at their apartment. He is calm, it must have been
going on for quite some time, the comeback... It’s not a matter for
dramatizing, it’s not even a matter for taking steps... he almost feels sorrier
for the other than himself...

5. Do I have to?..

The only issue that is still open - against the background of the other one’s
confused and inconsistent mumbling about his new passions (they discuss even
this now).

No. This is not the closeness that their relationship could reach, and yet, no
matter how hard he tries, the question he asks himself grows harder and harder,
until it turns into the final -

6. Was That What It Was?!?!?!?!

This is the end. And what an end is, everyone understands in his own way. The
club - that same one, their regular hang-out, the music - of the similar
kind... But he doesn’t hear the music, only the rhythm, the clear and definite
rhythm, that either strikes him on the cheeks with loud slaps, or hits his
back, his shoulders in a masterly way... Or it rips him apart with a burst of
machine-gun fire, bombs crashing all around - at the very moment when he had
thought he could calmly see the other - dancing and laughing with strangers...

Up the stair-case and outside. There should be some other music somewhere
else... the music that he’s not accustomed to... that he doesn’t really need...

This apartment, it’s black and white now (from now on). The whole movie, if
you haven’t noticed, was colorful. :) And he doesn’t see anyone inside it, no
strange belongings... Everything’s clean, decent, empty... And the final "I
want" in this movie is -

7. I Want A Dog.

The one problem is, the voice listing the breeds behind his back, without ever
looking at him, and, apparently, wanting a dog as badly in another empty
apartment - belongs to him, the other.

THE END!!!!!!
