| Twiggy was hatched on October 2, 1999, in Ottawa, Ontario, of wild-caught parents. She was hand-raised/hand- fed. She joined our family on January 20, 2000, when she was fully weaned. She was DNA sexed, so we know for sure she is a female, as Senegal parrots are difficult to sex visually. She has learned to say "Pretty bird", and has picked up "Spencer" and "Mommy" from daily household conversation, although her voice isn't very clear at this point. She also whistles, and imitates several household sounds: the microwave beeping, the phone ringing and dialing, a squeaky chair, and even tries to imitate my son's screams! She is a delight to have and is completely tame. She loves nothing more than to get her head scratched, and to have a taste of whatever we're eating. Senegal parrots have long life-spans, so we hope to have her for a long time to come! |
