*** ON FOCUS ***

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL M4WD RACERS

Racers have come a long way since the hobby started. New innovations, materials used, and skill all take part in honing the racers of today. Our cars are faster and more stable. We have to admit that compared to the way the game is played then, we can conquer obstacles now with speed and certainty. Research and technology as often discussed in the forum, is one of the asset of each team or racer.

The strength of teams and its support to its members have played a big part in elevating the level of the game. However, there are casual individual players and teams, that are being left out.

I spoke with some racers whom I dont get to see anymore, and said that they just cant compete in races anymore. Some are resigned to the fact and have evaluated their "weapons" to be of "no match" in the playing field, specially in open races. Of course we can always surmise that "well, its their problem..you are the weakest link...GOODBYE"

Most often than not you would see the same faces anywhere, North South East and West..and a few unfamiliar ones..

I have seen new racers gettin back into the hobby, and just starting the hobby..whatever the standing, beginner, novice, intermediate or master..they all have passion in the hobby.

MY CONCERN IS TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD IN OPEN RACES BY PROPOSING A SYSTEM OF RACER CLASSIFICATION. Similar to golf, bowling, or tennis, there are handicaps and ranking. The concept is there, the logistics is something that really needs to be working on.

I. Rationale:

By leveling the playing field among open racers, no matter how much the envelope of Mini M4WD racing is pushed, initiative and challenge will be instigated in the racer, whether he is a beginner or the Michael Jordan (tipong bored na sa sobrang galing, pero babalik rin sa Basketball) or Tiger Woods of minis.

Is racer classification demoralizing or discriminatory? I have long thought of the idea and thougt it to be so, but in a sportsman perspective, its a challenge. Goodness, it could even be a party ice-breaker in a cocktail..tipong "ano rank mo?"..."ano handicap mo?" Wouldnt you be excited to race to increase your rank (in the future, there could even be a statisical rank as to who is no. 1 no. 15 or 137th). Wouldnt you be excited to reach master, and maintain it? your rank could go down if you dont maintain it.

II. Objective

Create a system of racer classification in open races (big and weekly races may apply)

III. Methodology

A lot of you are a lot better than this, so do provide your suggestions, I couldnt think of any as of yet other than this

A. Ranking

Ranking will be based on wins. This is due to the fact that of all the given variables in evaluating one's skill and competence in racing, winning in races still remains to be the best objective benchmark due to its comprehension. It encompasses skill, car set-up, initiative to race and stamina. One might say that Racer Joe, is a very good racer, but since he has not been active and racing for 2 months, he would have no wins..he is a good and capable racer-- YES, but in terms of initiative to race, well, he lacks in that dept. More or less that it is the concept.

Ranking will be classified into
1) Novice or Class C
2) Intermediate or Class B
3) Master or Class A

Novice or Class C is categorically defined as racers who have not placed among the semi-finals in a weekly or big race in the last 3 months

Intermediate or Class B is categorically defined as racers who have placed among the semi-finals in a weekly or big race in the last 3 months

Master or Class A is categorically defined as racers who have won in a weekly or big race in the last 3 months

B. Registry

Racing centers or organizers keep some sort of manual data base or records of who wins in races. Self proclaimed classification or nominated classifaction would be the easiest way at first, besides, data from organizers and testimonies of other racers can vouch for the claim of each racer.

C.Imposition of Racer classification in races

First and foremost, it is up to the racing center or race organizer to impose the ranking. I would suggest this to racing centers and weekly race organizers, since

1) racers more or less know each other
2) a small group is always a good sample or test group

How does it work in a race?

Since pairing is inivitable, let us not put the burden of pairing Class C and Class C on the race organizer and racing center, instead, Class C can be paired against class A, by means of handicap

How does the handicap work?

Regardless of the lane number the racer chooses:
Class C always start at the starting line
Class B always start 2 car lengths behind a Class C racer
Class A always start 4 car lengths behind the finish line
The finish line still remains to be the starting line (starting line of class C)

If all racers are of equal class, they all start on the same starting line.

How does this apply in weekly or big races?

This can be applied all throughout the heats or only on the eliminations (first and second heat), it would depend on the race organizer. Imposition of the handicap system all throughout the race will give the chance for Class C racers to improve ranking, and even win. This will test the Class A racer how good he really is even on the circumstance of handicap

This add challenge to the seasoned racer, his brake adjustmemt factor will totally change!

The system is not perfect, there are details that are not posted here (kailangan ko maghanda..kakarera pa ako!) and answers to "what ifs" scenario. Like anything its open to politics and cheating and what have you, its how you define it to be

Please give your comments on the matter, logistics, details, possible problems (ang dami!), or if this thing is even worth pursuing...

you can give your comments via email:
