A 80 yr old bedridden patient died.  An autopsy was done.

 

1.    Identify the organ and give your diagnosis?

 

Lung. Bronchopneumonia.

 

 

2.    List the main histological features.

Patchy consolidation of alveolar tissues / spaces (multinucleated, bilateral, basal, mutilobar)

Suppurative, neutrophil rich exudates fills the bronchi, bronchioles and adjacent alveolar spaces

 

 

3.    Give 2 clinical manifestations.

Malaise, fever, cough with sputum

Pleuritic chest pain.

 

 

4.    What are the common causal organisms?

 

a.    Staphylococcus aureus.

b.    Streptococcus pneumoniae.

c.    Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
