M116A1 Type III D Phaser Rifle, and M116A2  Type III F Phaser Rifle
The M-116A2 is the new standard Light Infantry weapon of Starfleet and the SFMC.  Introduced in the fall of 2375 as the M-116A1, this weapon is the Type III Model D carried by Starfleet.  The A2 version has a sheathed-over barrel, adds luminescent lines on the dorsal side to serve as a low-light waist-aiming device for snap shots, an enhanced illuminated reticle system in the scope, and increased counter-measures against Energy Dampening Fields. The armored sheath allows it can also have accessories such as laser-dot sights and beam scramblers fitted to it, in addition to Weaponmount Grenade Launchers such as the Colt Firearms Division G203 or the Federation Firearms Technologies SPW-201A1.

As with standard Starfleet Weaponry, both the A1 and A2 can be adjusted from a wide-field cone dispersion pattern down to a "needle" pinpoint beam application.  Both are slightly heavier than the rifle they replace, the  M110 Type III C, but are also more powerful. More importantly, they have a shoulder stock - the lack of which was the chief complaint about the M-110, which is still in service as a light carbine.

These rifles provide the necessary firepower for common direct-fire infantry situations. They possess the full standard sixteen power levels of the Starfleet phaser rifle, with the addition of a pulse-burst automatic firing mode that conserves energy over the steady stream that is found on the M-970 Heavy Compression Rifle. Both are reloaded from standard WC-2 power clips, of which three are normally carried in battle dress by Starfleet Crewmembers, and 8 by Marines.
