lEchos From the Past
Part One

Peter sat at his desk at the 101st.  There were a pile of cases that he had to go through.  It seemed that as soon as he finished around ten done, the Chief would pile 20 more files on his desk.

" I guess this is what I get for not listening to orders," he muttered under his breath.  He had just returned to work two days ago after another battle with bullets which he had lost.  It had nearly cost him his life.  The only reason he had survived was because Kermit had followed him.  He had disobeyed his Captain's orders about  not going in to check a lead on a group of drug dealer's without back up.  Being Peter, he had ignored the order and went in any way.  That disobedience had cost him two bullets.  It would not have been so bad, but when the first bullet hit him, he had been spun around and the second bullet hit him in the chest. The bullet had traveled and had damaged his left lung and had traveled down and had done some more damage before stopping by his spinal cord. Kermit had rushed in found him unconsious and bleeding heavily and had called the ambulance.  The doctors told him they had almost lost him, but his stubbornness had won out and he had once more survived in spite of it all.
He had spent months in rehabilitation, and was only now finally able to go back to work.
However, the Captain had assigned him to desk duty until further notice. Just then Peter's computer beeped signaling that he had a new e-mail.  He opened it and read it.  He paled and his hands began to shake as the words on the screen leaped out at him.

" This isn't over Caine.  Next time I will aim to kill.  I was just
playing with you when that first bullet hit .The second was a mistake
which has been taken care of.  Beware Caine! I am coming for you!!"

Part 2

Peter stared at the screen.  There was no name so he didn't have a clue as to who sent the message.  He got up and headed in to Kermit's office.  He knocked, of course, not wanting to lose fingers, or something worse just for forgetting to knock.  Peter heard a rough "ENTER."
"What can I..." Kermit stopped in mid-sentence as Peter walked in.  He noticed that the young man was pale and his hands were shaking. "Whoa Kid.  You better sit down and tell me what is wrong."

" Kermit, do you remember when I got shot three months ago?" asked Peter.  " How could I forget.  We nearly lost you. Why?"  " Well, I just got an e-mail from someone who says that they were
there that night. He says that the next time we meet he is going to kill me and that I better watch my back. It sounds like he knows me."  Kermit grew very upset at what he was hearing.  No one ever
threatened his friends and got away with it.  He made a promise to himself to bring these people to justice by whatever means necessary.  " Did the e-mail have a name or some indication of who it was from?" asked Kermit.
" No.  That's why I came to you.  I was hoping that you could trace it back to its point of origin."
" Hey, that's what us frogs do best.  Come on let's go to your computer and get started."

Somewhere else, a man sat in his office.  He had just sent an e-mail to Peter Caine. He was now waiting for a response or some sign that his message had been received.  He didn't have to wait long, for as he sat and watched, a message came up saying that his e-mail was being traced.  " I don't think so Caine.  I was hoping you would e-mail me, but I guess not.  Well I have a little surprise for you."  He leaned over and spoke into his microphone.  "Proceed with phase one."

"Are you getting anywhere Kermit?" asked Peter.  " These people have blocks set up and I have to get past them.  But I can't do that if you are hovering over my shoulder.  Now sit down."  " Sorry I have a feeling that something is about to go wrong."   " Well Kid....." Kermit never got a chance to finish, because something came crashing through precinct window.  " What the...." Kermit and Peter dove for cover. That is when the lights went out and two shots were heard.

Part 3

Kermit slowly rose from the hard floor. He looked around and saw that the emergency lights had come on.  " Hey, Peter?  Where are you??  PETER?"  Kermit looked around frantically trying to find Peter.  Finally he found him.  He was on the floor about five feet away, and had a blood stain on his left arm.

"Peter!!  Hey are you all right?" Kermit asked as he rushed to Peter's side.  Kermit turned him over and was relieved to see that of the two bullet shots heard earlier, only one had hit its target. It had just
grazed Peter's left arm.  " Kermit are you okay?" asked Peter.  " Oh yeah!  What about you Kid?"

" I'm hit and I have a few bumps here and there, but overall I don't think it's too bad. I'm doing fine." With the police precinct in the dark, bullets having just been fired into the facility, chaos was occurring at this moment.  The police where trying to calm everyone down.  The detective's where trying to find out what had just happened, and who may have been hit. Phones where ringing off the hooks, with no one bothering to answer them.

Peter slowly rose from the ground and carefully walked to his desk.  Or what was left of his desk. The window that used to be at the front desk had been shattered when the hand grenade had been thrown into the precinct, had totally obliterated Peter's desk and damaged those around his. Captain Simms was going around checking on her officers when she noticed that Peter was holding his arm gingerly, applying pressure to get the bleeding stopped.

"Peter, are you all right?" asked Simms.

"Yeah. The bullet just grazed me."
