Cont. of Part 9
Caine waited by his son's bedside. It had been two hours since they had helped Peter. There had still been no change. Caine feared that Peter was going to leave him. As he was watching Peter, he felt a change in him. He tensed with fear. That is when Peter slowly opened his eyes. Caine smiled with pleasure. It had worked. Peter blinked a couple of times. As Caine watched, he saw Peter's eyes shine with fear as he noticed the respirator.
"It is all right my son. This is to help your body as it heals. Are you in any pain?"
Peter looked into his father's eyes, and there Caine saw the pain, fear, and confusion. As Caine watched, Peter's eyes slowly closed.
"Rest now my son. I will be here when you wake up." Caine went and called the doctor. Now that he was stable, they could operate. Caine knew that Peter was still in danger. It was up to the doctors now.
The doctors rolled Peter to the operating room. There they worked on him to stop the bleeding. The doctors finally finished. They had corrected all the damage that they could find. They were still going to leave him on the respirator to help him breath and to give his lungs more of a chance to heal. They were just glad that he had finally stabilized enough to operate. Had they waited any longer, Peter would have bleed to death. It had been three days since Peter had come out of surgery. The doctors had taken him off the respirator late last night. He was doing good they said. They had not noticed any new complications. Caine sat and watched as Peter slept. He was glad that he had his son back. He was not going to lose his son.
"Pop?"
Caine looked and saw that Peter was awake.
"Hello my son. How are you feeling?"
"Tired. I hurt all over. Where is mom?
"She went downstairs with Kermit to get some coffee. They will be up in a moment."
"Pop, did they catch Travis?" "No my son. When we found you, you were alone. Kermit searched the whole building, there was no one there."
Annie and Kermit entered in to the room.
"Hey kid. Nice to see you awake. I really didn't want to have to be stuck with doing all your cases at work."
Peter threw Kermit a dirty look. "Thanks for the sympathy." "Well, you have been here quite a few times, so I thought that if I was mean to you, you would stop being a guest here. Besides, the hospital here is having a hard time finding replacement nurses. It seems that no one wants to work here." The doctor came in and greeted everyone. "Hello. I see that our patient is awake. Good. I would like to take him down to radiology to get some x-rays done. I will send a nurse in to take him down."
A few moments later a male nurse came in. He wasn't looking too happy. Kermit guessed that he had lost whatever bet the nurses had been wagering. He watched as Peter was rolled out. He was glad that the kid was going to be fine.
*************** Travis sat in his office. He had been listening in on the conversation, and was delighted to see an opening for him to proceed with phase three of his plan. He picked up his phone and dialed. He told his man at the hospital to proceed with phase three. He laughed out loud. He knew that once Peter Caine was back in his hands, he would be much happier. He could continue with his game, all the while taking his anger out on Peter. Yes, this was going to be a great day indeed. ***************
Travis's man watched as Peter was being taken down to radiology. He waited until the elevator door was about to close before he made his move.
"Wait, hold the elevator. Thanks. Hey, what happened to this guy?"
"I really don't know. This is only my second day here."
"That's too bad." He whipped out a gun and hit the nurse over the head with the butt of the gun. Peter tried to get up, to do something, but he was still weak, and his body screamed out in protest. The man pressed the button that would send them to the parking garage. Once there, he pushed Peter to his van and unloaded the bed with Peter on it into the back of the van.
There were three more men waiting and they helped to secure the bed in place. Then they injected Peter with a drug. This caused Peter to slip into darkness. ***************
Caine had been waiting for Peter to return when he felt great fear and confusion. He knew that Peter had been taken again. Kermit had already left to go back to the precinct. When he got there he knew that it meant trouble. There was another email from Travis.
"I see that you couldn't keep your prize. A pity. Now you have to find it all over again. But this time it will be harder, and you only have three days to do it in. Oh, one more thing. For every wrong move that you make, Peter will pay the price. Good Luck!" |
