advice / opinion column
This Urban Diva is satirical, edgey and comedic, but has solid opinions and advice. got issues? we all do, and ... what?
...whose reality are we watching anyway? ...

Maybe it's just me, but I'm a little discriminating when it comes to what I consider "tasteful". For about a decade now, we've watched women wearing "bad weaves" in "spaghetti strapped swap-meet sundresses" with no bras and "barely" a panty on, coming on T.V. to fight over men ... (or in some cases, women)... knowing that somebody is going to get "beat down", and will probably end up having them cheap dresses torn off too. First of all, ..."I"... and most people I know would never, ever, ever, ever, ... and might I stress, ... ever - go on National Television to air our dirty laundry or confront someone with some "mess". That is just "low budget". In fact, that's usually not even how it's done in real life, unless of course there's some alcohol or other substance involved, and then you may be talkin' bout something that you heard happened at th' club the other night, O.K.?

Then there are the "baby's daddy's" shows. Now, "mzstephens" can't be that old y'all - did the rules of reproduction change, and nobody told me? I thought most women knew or somewhere along the way will be taught that you can only actually conceive the one day a month that you are "ovulating", and even then you may be talking about only a time frame of a couple of hours. So ... if you've got to test five, six, seven or more men for the paternity of your child, what does that say about you? ...Boo, I'm in agreement with everyone who says you are taking the "wrong test". I'll let you figure that statement out. Have you noticed most of the men"s responses about the female in question, are negative and derogatory, yet they had no problem sampling the goods, even though nine times out of ten, they had a girlfriend or wife waiting for them at home?

I thought reality shows would run their course and be out of here eventually, but then someone came up with the "finding love" shows, and even they have spinoffs. What is that? You watch them play out into what? A "HOT MESS". It's disgusting watching people act insecure and desperate, some of the behavior, worse than dogs in heat. I don't know how far these individuals actually go in the way of intimacy, (I'm sure some of it is exaggerated for ratings sake) ... but I wouldn't want to be on the same block with some of these folks, so being in the same room is out of the question.

Most of us clearly recognize this stuff for what it is, "exploitation". But because some of these show participants end up "famous" from having their faces plastered across television and other media and are ultimately courted by advertisers, clothing designers, record labels etc., they are thrust into the spotlight where unfortunately, our youth are still enticed into emulating their behavior, no matter how pitiful and wreckless it is. That's why we have to instill confidence and self respect in our children, so they don't need to go elsewhere for attention. I know that I'm not sayin' anything that hasn't already been said, and there really is such a thing as "mindless entertainment" and that isn't just the name of a production company.

I don't know y'all, ... "mzstephens" just ain't with all that "drama" and "mess", so there's not a whole lot of it that interests or entertains me. I don't find much of it "funny" and I don't understand the need or desire to humiliate oneself in the public eye. In fact, the only reality I'm feelin' is "Oprah's". She's got "Giraffe money" and I ain't mad at her. I wanna be just like her when I grow up!
