Entry for November 1, 2006
This last weekend while on a caching trip my son says "Mom can I start logging yet?" This left me a little puzzeled. Spearfox and I have been pretty certain that we didn't want the kids to be on line yet. The internet can be such a haven for preditors. I was pondering all these thoughts while my son was waiting for an answer. I also began to think about how recently we have been letting him search online for pictures and games while closely monitored. As we were getting out of the truck and he is running to the cache he was still waiting for my answer. That's when I decided OK followed closely by "you do know now that you will have to stick to one logging name and you will have to do the logging on line yourself." He was so excited he didn't even mind that I made him cram his new logging name on the micro log. Now for those of us who have been writing for years this isn't a big deal but for a second grader who has been doing all of thier writing on those "Big Chief" tablet style papers a micro log is a challenge. He concentrated so hard and did a good job only taking up two lines. Then as the day progressed he said "Can I hide one?" Well I decided that if your going to jump in the water you might as well jump in the whole way. So he made is first hide. Once again we had the discusion that he was going to be responsible for it. The entire ride home he was bouncing in his seat and couldn't wait to get to the computer. It was fun listening to all the names he was thinking up for his cache. Who would have thought a simple skirt lifter cache could be so rewarding. We get home and he could hardly wait for me to create his account. I think he was a little agitated that I made him do his three find logs first. I'm trying to teach him that he has to write more than TFTC SL. While we submitted his cache he had a whole new learning experience. He learned that he was going to have to write about the cache. He thought the stories just misteriously appeared I guess. So even if he only wrote a little at least he is trying. I never thought about caching from the aspect of writing so much before. I just always enjoyed the journey that the hunt created. This has brought a whole new deminsion to this sport. By the way
on Monday morning he was asking if he could use his allowance to become a premium member? This from a kid who previously would only use it for new PS2 games. He said he now wants to hide a memebers only cache. What a hoot!
