Entry for July 8, 2007
Well, today wasn't really about geocaching so much. We took our new gently used sail boat out for the day for the first time. It has been along time in coming. First Destiny broke her arm about 2 weeks after we got it. So that delayed us. Then the never ending rain... We were finally ready when the truck got a flat, on the spare which we should have already fixed. We finally got ourselves to gether when I decided to call before we left to find out where to get the city lake permit. Good thing I did because it seemed like everyone was out of them. I bet I spent an hour on the phone trying to find a permit. Finally we found that Bass Pro had some on hand. So we quickly load the kids up and off we go for Bricktown. We picked up the $25 permit and spent our "obligatory" $100 in the store for merchandise. (Why is it that nothing is as simple as it seem?) Get home change vehicles feed kids because by now it is well past lunch time. Head out then about 4 blocks from the house our son asks "Dad did you put the stickers on the boat?" Well shoot!!! We turn around and head back home seeing that hubby thought he would be safe and leave his wallet at home with said boat stickers in it! About a block away from the house the truck starts to over heat! Great! So by then Spearfox had that look in his eye. No matter what was going to happen today I could tell he was going to get that boat in the water. At this point he decided to go to Wal Mart and pic up a hitch to go in the reciever on our mini van (the one that barely goes 60 on the highway). I'm thinking to myself there is noway that van is going to pull that boat. Granted it is a light weight boat but we are talking about a gerbel ran 4 cylinder minivan that had trouble in Euricka springs going up the mountains with just people in it. I think he was gone from the house about an hour to get said hitch. Amazingly the van pulled the boat. I was in shock! We finally made it to the areana at Lake Hefner. We managed to get the boat set up pretty uneventfully. I made conversation with another couple with kids on a sail boat. I asked them that if they saw us doing something wrong then it probably was wrong and if we looked in distress then we probably were. You see it has been over 20 years since I have been sailing and the rest of the family never has. My nerves were a little on edge. It wasn't until after we had unloaded the boat that I realized that we didn't have a cleet to anchor the boat to the dock while we waited for Spearfox to park the van and trailer. By the time he made it back to the boat my arm was already starting that muscel burning sensation you get when your doing something your body doesn't want to. It was pretty suprising how fast things like sailing can come back to you. Maybe it was the fear of telling my kids "Well I guess we are going to have to swim to shore." But managed to get controle of the boat pretty easily. I was suprised at how naturally my son got his sense of balance in the boat. My daughter on the other hand we had to keep reminding to not move to quickly from side to side. After a little while I handed the controle over to Spearfox and he suprised me. For the last 15 years or so I've teased him saying how I wasn't sure he would ever be able to sail. It didn't take him verry long and he had it down. He ended up dropping my son and I off at the shore and headed out with our daughter then later dropped her off so he could do some solo sailing. We finished the day of with one last family outing. My son finally became brave enough to take over the rutter a couple of times. I attempted to back the trailer into the boat ramp. When I finally got extremly frustrated. I jumped out of the van and went to the back and just dragged the blankety blank blank trailer strait behind the van with sheer brute force. Then a nice guy (whom probably was just getting tired of waiting and laughing at the blond who couldn't back a trailer) offered to help. (Thanks!) Once that was done we loaded the boat back up pretty easily. That was a suprise something went easy. What a wonderfull day. On the way home we stopped for some drive through dinner and Spearfox and I laughed when we saw that we got a nickle in our change with a sail boat on it. Maybe we will get some interesting caches out there soon. Who knows but the adventure has just begun!
