"The mission of the R.E.A.D. program is to improve the literacy skills
of children through the assistance of registered Pet Partner® therapy
teams as literacy mentors. The intent of the R.E.A.D. program is to have
children read to the therapy animals."
Okay. This sounds pretty neat to me, I admit.
It also really cracks me up. How does one train a dog to be a R.E.A.D. Therapy Pet? What could possibly be involved in this certification?
"Now, Fi-fi... you must learn to sit still for the whole story. Walking away before the child is finished reading just won't do. There will be no scratching, licking your privates, or begging for biscuits during the story."
Maxwell the Wunderhund does not need to be trained for this job. He is the perfect candidate. He knows how to stay for hours at a time. And he could care less what you read to him. It's all the same to a dog. I guess that's part of the beauty of this program!
