Mr.M.C.Perry is an American who came to Japan to make Japan open to other countries in 1853.
Japanese had not ever seen a ship made by iron.
They said that only 4 cups make them stop sleeping.
It describes 4 ships as a tea,and also waking is maning opening of the door of the country.
At the same time,Mr.Perry was surprised to see Edo kiriko. It was a culture shock for both!
Edo kiriko is the name of the tecnique to facet the surface of glass with grooves.
It can be gone back to the 5th.year of Tempo(1834) when Kagaya Kyubei, the proprietor
of a Vidro(Port.glass) shop in Odemma-cho in Edo,contrived to engrave designs into the surface of glass by applying emery on it.
With many photographs,I described about Edo kiriko in the site of Tokyo Down Town Network, please see!
