JAPANESE TRADITIONAL WOOD-BLOCK PRINT BY HAND
The technique of wood-block printing was first introduced into Japan, with Buddistic art, in HEIAN period (A.D.806-1190). Japanese people had enough sence of beauty to develop it into fine art to make beautiful polychromatic print, UKIYOE, which has been enjoyed all over the world. Today, more than one of the works are valued as fine art.

In EDO period (A.D.1615-1865), the heyday of UKIYOE, wood-block printings had played a great part for entertainment and education. It was used for making newspaper, magazine, and prints of Kabuki actors by SHARAKU and landscape by HIROSHIGE, which were deeply rooted to people's daily lives. After the Meiji Restoration, machine printing was introduced and handcraft printing had demised. Today, the beauties of the traditional techniques are enjoyed again by art-loving people in reproduced works of UKIYOE and other Japanese style paintings. On the other hand, the skill was passed down over the years by the means of traditional new year cards, fans, and colorful papers like Chiyogami. It has in turn created a tradition of its own.

The fact that the essence of wood-blocking that once spread joy and pleasure to people still living in the hearts of contemporary Japanese, makes us happy to be the one to take part in the tradition.
In fact,about 120 years has passed when Vincent Van Gogh had first impressed by Ukiyoe.
The tradition may be changed,I feel. The earth may renotice Ukiyoe and get boiled by Mrs.Takahashi's great idea and enthusiasms!!
