The photo　is“manekineko”, meaning“inviting cat”.
The cat invites fortune or more customer. So,you can often see it in the Janpanese restaurant or other shops.

Are they a supersitition? No, I think, it's a custom from old and good days in Japan.
But,I don't know wheter the days like that exsist or not!
