Tired of going to work? ![]() I am sure you know the routine. You wake up, drag yourself to the toilet, brush your teeth and try to figure the best excuses as to why you should not go to work today. By the time you make your way to work, you would have thought about retirement, your next vacation and would have counted down the number of days to the weekend. If you have been doing this day in and out for years, I suppose it is time to come to terms with yourself and admit that there is something seriously wrong with the whole thing! Check this out.."So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot." - Ecclesiastes 3:22 Think about it for a while. There is wisdom in there. We are essentially made to do work. I am a Christian and I believe that God worked and rested on the seventh day. Adam, my ancestor, took on the job of naming things on his first day of work. Work is suppose to be a good thing. And if it is a good thing, retirement would then be a weird concept. Imagine..if work (yes, put aside your bias against that word for a while) is a good thing, something to be enjoyed and looked forward to..as you would with your beach vacations, then isn't it wonderful to be alive then? One would then be truly alive. Yeah, Mondays to Fridays. But the reality is far from that. Try taking the train to work in the morning and you will surely see the glum in peoples' faces. It is pathetic. Where is the happiness, man? I sincerely believe that Adam had a good time naming things. The Bible stated that God actually worked with him throughout the process. I can imagine God explaining why an elephant was created and evolved in a certain way and Adam, with full conviction, decided to name it - elephant. There is a lot of creativity involved here. No frustrations cascaded down from bosses. No office politics. No bitching around. No deadlines but lots of eagerness to get the job done. A lot of fun was involved. Every single piece of work becomes part of the creation process and Adam was able to use all the innate talents that he has been gifted with to the fullest. Hey, Adam was freed to eat whatever fruit that he delighted in (with the exception of one). No need to pay bills ie. no need to work for a living. In essence, Adam had the freedom to do one's work. I suppose that was Adam's biggest workplace incentive - freedom to do one's work. Those of you who have read the Book of Genesis would know that Adam was eventually retrenched from his workplace and was cursed with much hardship. He had to actually work the ground in order to get food. Yes, he was sentenced to the state that most of us can empathise with - he had to work for his living. I don't know what I can write to help remedy your current drudgery. But I do know that we can't change the waves upon waves of glum faces that we see when we head out to work. We can't wish our deadlines and tough bosses away. We can at best change our attitudes and mindsets. If, for a moment, we attain some kind of material contentment regardless of our financial status, take pride in our workmanship, put our God-given creativity to use then we may actually have found the anti-biotics that we need to go through another day at the grind.
