Ancient Trading
Hermes, The Messanger
Greek markets were where farmers met to barter and trade items.  The marketplace was where the ancient Greeks would buy items and argued about politics.  Each person argued about the best way to run their city-state.
Trading items over sea was very dangerous because navigation was directed by the stars.  This strategy had many flaws.  Sea travel was also dangerous because
pirates captured the sailors and sold them as slaves in remote islands.
The Greeks began copying the idea of having coins from Lydia.  Each city-state had their own issue of coins.  As a result, there are different looking Greek coins.  At first, the Greeks thought coins were too valuable to use in everyday marketplace.  Later coins made out of bronze or cheap metal were used in daily shopping.  Some people were very dishonest and would secretly cut off a few gold or silver pieces of it before actually using the coin.  Officials would put a picture on the coin to know when someone had shaved the face of the coin.
Hermes was the god of messages.   He informed the main god Zeus regarding the whereabouts of Hera (his wife) and the other gods.  Like some people today, Hermes was known as a comedian and trickster.  Once he made Zeus' cattle walk backwards for numerous days.  Hermes was famous for being helpful in times of need.  He was appointed a planet, Mercury, named for his Roman name.  Hermes still inspires people today to help others and to tell people if there is trouble ahead.
This is a picture of Hermes, messenger of all gods.
