Humans called them Dark Creatures and described their alliance as a 'necessary evil;' oft reminding the magical community that Dementors were mere servants of the Ministry. The Dementors of Azkaban knew better; the Ministry required them far more than they had need of it. The petty Ministry wizards who made reluctant trips to the Dementors' isle understood this in their shaking bones even as they gulped Dreamless Sleep Potion after their inspections.

A mere wizard would never understand what it was to taste joy. Only a Dementor could truly consume happiness, savor all its heady flavors. All other beings were unworthy save as prey. The Dementor who lingered outside Hogwart's ornate gates understood this well.

Or so it thought. Then came the night the Dementor encountered Professor Flitwick.

A small, almost laughable creature to look at, but he shown like a beacon on a stormy night. The fear of others surrounded him - children on their way back from a Hogsmeade visit - but nothing could diminish his own joy of living. The Dementor glided closer, awed at this one. It longed to sample his joy, but honor dictated it remain distant.

All throughout the year, it watched and hoped Flitwick would venture just a little closer. Students and visitors passed by the gates with a shudder though the Dementor paid them little heed, they were neither Black nor the special one who remained within the ancient castle.

Then came the night the fugitive Black escaped again. The others felt only rage at his second departure from custody, but the Dementor relished its chance to stand in Flitwicks office and sample the echoes of his presence. The Dementor knew this would have to satisfy; no wizard would long abide the presence of one of Azkaban's guardians.
