In the beginning, there was only us. There were blue skies, and bonfires, and late nights. There was talking the days away, and bathing in the lake, and summer love. There was sleeping in, and sharing stories, and love that went on forever, like the deepest ocean, and the darkest night sky. And after all that time, and all that pain… there was you.
In the beginning, there was only you. You, watching me with gentle interest. You, soothing away my nightmares. You, holding my hand until I stopped sobbing. You, making my laugh. You, my shoulder to cry on. You. My love.
In the end, there was only me. Me, bringing you in from the cold after your last fight. Me, sitting by your bedside as the wound kept you awake, watching the fires gently burning across the city I grew up in… Me, sobbing by your grave, all alone in the silence. And pain that went on forever, like the deepest ocean, and the darkest night sky.
Why is it that time couldn’t just keep us in the beginning, crystallised with our memories of blue skies and bonfires and love that went on forever?
