Cho Chang
Birth Date: 1979
Description: Short with long, black hair.
Biography: Cho Chang first appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as the Ravenclaw Seeker and Harry's first crush. According to Oliver Wood, Cho had been injured and unable to play until that time. As Quidditch was cancelled the previous year and Harry was unconscious during the Gryffindor-Ravenclaw match in book one (where Ravenclaw "steamrollered" Gryffindor), it is unknown when she joined the team. She would have been a second year at the time and eligible to play for the team. Cho flies a Comet 260 and was described as being a very good flier. Her passion for Quidditch has apparently been a constant in her life; she has been a fan of the Tutshill Tornadoes since she was six and sometimes wears a Tornados badge at school. She is likely from a wizarding family.
It is not until the fourth book that much is revealed about her personality. She waves to Harry at the Quidditch World Cup. She did not wear a 'Support Cedric Diggory' button. She was spotted with a group of her friends. When Harry asks her to the ball, she is very polite and blushes when she turns him down because she already has a date. She attends the Yule Ball with Cedric Diggory. When Cedric is toasted at the farewell feast, tears run down her face.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Cho is shown depressed and grieving. She and Harry briefly become a couple, but their relationship is hardly healthy. Despite her parents instructions not to defy Umbridge, Cho drags her friend Marietta Edgecombe to the initial D.A. meeting. Cho supports her even arguing that Hermione’s anti-treachery jinx was unfair after Marietta informs on the group. Cho is among the students to master the Patronus Charm; hers is a swan although she has difficulties with other skills including disarming. At the first D.A. meeting she accidentally set Marietta's sleeve on fire. After she and Harry brake up after arguing over Marietta and the ethics of Hermione's jinx, Cho became involved with Michael Corners. At the Quidditch final between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, Harry spotted her "chatting animatedly" with Roger Ravies. After losing the match to Gryffindor, Cho threw her broom to the ground.
Meaning of Name: Cho (Korean) - Beautiful.
Chang (Chinese) - Smooth.

Michael Corner
Birth Date: 1980
Description: Dark hair.
Biography: Michael met Ginny Weasley at the Yule Ball and the pair began to date each other. Thanks to Ginny's influence Michael and his friends, including Terry Boot, joined Dumbledore's Army. At the first D.A. meeting, Michael had difficulty disarming Ginny Weasley because of his feelings for her. He became depressed after Gryffindor beat Ravenclaw in the Quidditch final, which led to his break up with Ginny. Michael soon began to date Cho Chang. In his sixth year, Michael took N.E.W.T. level Potions.
Meaning of Name: Michael (Hebrew) - Who is like God? The name of the only one identified archangel in the Bible.
Corner (English) - The position at which two lines, surfaces, streets, etc. intersect to form an angle. In popular usage it means to acquire a large enough position in a particular area to achieve control over price and supply.

Penelope Clearwater
Birth Date: 1976
Description: Long and curly dark hair.
Biography: The most notable things about Penelope in the books are her relationship with Percy Weasley, and the basilisk attack. She first appears as the Ravenclaw prefect Ron and Harry mistakenly ask for directions on their way to the Slytherin Common Room - possibly just after one of her meetings with Percy as he is seen in the same area. Penelope is offended by being mistaken for a Slytherin, hardly surprising considering that she is later revealed as a Muggle-born. The next reference to her occurs when she and Hermione are attacked. It is likely that the mirror found next to them belonged to Penelope. She may have suggested its use after Hermione revealed the nature of the beast to her.
Later we learn from Ginny that she had been meeting Percy all around the school and that Ginny had found the pair kissing. From this conversation, it is revealed that Penelope and Percy began dating sometime in the previous year and wrote each other constantly over the summer. Since Penelope is Muggle-born and might not have an owl of her own, this explains why Percy's owl Hermes was gone so much over the summer. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Percy's picture of her picture hides under a frame as she has a spot, she admires Harry's new broom, and makes a bet with Percy for ten galleons (that Percy does not have!) that Ravenclaw will win the Quidditch match between their two houses. Some have used this point to label Penelope as callous or cruel, but we do not know whether she actually initiated the bet or not.
Since Penelope is not mentioned in later books, it is possible that she and Percy have broken up.
Meaning of Name: Penelope (Greek) - Weaver. In mythology, Penelope was the clever and faithful wife of Odysseus who kept her obnoxious suitors at bay by weaving a shroud by day and unweaving it by night.

Roger Davies
Birth Date: c. 1979
Description: Unknown
Biography: Roger Davies is the captain and chaser for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. He was one of the many boys enamored of Fleur Delacour, and seemed stunned that she decided to be his date to the Yule Ball. They were among the couples to leave the ball for the outside rosebushes. Roger asked Cho Chang out in February 1996, but she turned him down. When Harry and Cho went out on Valentine's Day, they saw Roger involved with another girl.
Meaning of Name: Roger (German) - Famous spearman.
Davies (Hebrew) - Beloved, a form of David.

Marietta Edgecombe
Birth Date: Unknown
Description: Curly, reddish-blonde hair
Biography: The daughter of a Ministry employee; her mother works in the Department of Magical Transportation, Floo Network office. Marietta was told not to interfere with or oppose Umbridge in any way. Cho Chang, however, persuaded Marietta to attend the first D.A. meeting and partnered with her on disarming spells. Cho inadvertently set her sleeve on fire. When Marietta informed upon the D.A. to Umbridge and Fudge, an anti-treachery spell Hermione used came into effect and painted the word 'sneak' on her face in purple pustules. As soon as the jinx came into effect, Marietta refused to speak anymore. While Dumbledore was speaking, Kingsley Shacklebolt discretely hit Marietta with a Memory Charm. Later, Professor McGonagall dragged Harry and Marietta from the Headmaster's office to keep them out of harm's way. Even by the end of term, Marietta's face had not cleared up.
The following term had Marietta wearing heavy makeup to cover the remnant of the pimples.
Meaning of Name: Marietta (Italian) - A form of Maria.

S. Fawcett
Birth Date: Unknown, but likely 1980 or earlier
Description: Unknown
Biography: Fawcett is mentioned quite frequently throughout the books, though usually in passing, and her exact age or first name have never been given. She is first referred to by Lockhart during the dueling club scene where she is told to pinch her nose until the bleeding stops. Her name is also among those who checked Quidditch Through the Ages from the Hogwarts library. It was due back on September 16, and it is from this listing that her first initial is found. She is mentioned several on more occasions in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The Fawcett family, who live near Ottery St. Catchpole where the Weasleys live, were unable to obtain tickets to the Quidditch World Cup. Dumbledore tells the Weasley twins that Miss Fawcett and Mr. Summers of Hufflepuff also tried to cross the Age Line and place their names in the Goblet of Fire. From this we know that she was under seventeen years of age as of November 1995. Her last appearance in the fourth book is when she and Stebbens, a Hufflepuff, each lose ten points when Snape catches them under a rosebush during the Yule Ball. That she attended the Yule Ball places her at least in Harry's year, but she is not mentioned in the Sorting.
Meaning of Name: Fawcett (unknown) - The surname of Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett (1867-1925?), an explorer who vanished in South America while searching for an ancient lost city.

Filius Flitwick
Birth Date: October 17, unknown year.
Description: Tiny with white hair.
Biography: The Head of Ravenclaw House and Charms instructor at Hogwarts. Flitwick is an ancient and tiny wizard with goblin ancestry. He is rumored to have been a dueling champion in his youth. He is an experienced professor, having taught at Hogwarts at least as far back as the sixties or seventies, when James Potter and Sirius Black were students. Flitwick may have been one of Tom Riddle's instructors. Lily Potter (nee Evans) was a favorite student of his during the seventies. His teaching style is patient; he does not hand out many detentions or deduct points often, even for tardiness. Flitwick has a rich sense of humor and is always fair with his students, even those who are not in Ravenclaw. Due to his heritage Flitwick does not discriminate against those of different backgrounds.
He cares deeply about his students; when informed of Ginny Weasley's abduction by the Heir of Slytherin, he burst into tears. He enjoys decorating his classroom and the castle for holidays, especially with fairies and golden bubbles. Lockhart's decor scheme on Valentine's Day, however, embarrassed him. He appears to have a genuine interest in both teaching and his subject area, as evidenced by his discussion of summoning Charms with Harry and the overheard conversation regarding the Fidelius Charm. His office is located on the seventh floor, near the base of the West Tower of the castle and was briefly used to hold Sirius Black. He likes to drink cherry syrup and soda.
During Professor Umbridge's tenure as headmistress, Flitwick kept out of her way and refused to intervene in undoing acts of mischief. When Dumbledore returned, Flitwick undid the Weasley twins' swamp quickly though he kept a small part of the swamp up and roped off because he admired their work.
Flitwick was injured the night of Dumbledore's death by Severus Snape, whom McGonagall had sent him to fetch. When consulted on the fate of the school, Flitwick suggested they follow procedure and speak to the Governors.
Meaning of Name: Filius (Latin) son.
Flitwick is a combination of flit, meaning to move about rapidly and nimbly, and wick, a part of a candle.

Luna Lovegood
Birth Date: 1981
Description: Scraggly dark blond hair, misty, protuberant, eyes under pale brows.
Biography: Luna Lovegood is the daughter of Xenophilius Lovegood, editor of The Quibbler - a sort of magical tabloid. She saw her mother die during an experiment when she was nine and can see Thestrals. She lives near the Weasley family with her father. The Lovegoods attended the Quidditch World Cup but did not obtain very good seats. Luna is a somewhat spacey young witch who is more reliable than she appears. Luna has an unconventional fashion sense, wearing necklaces of bottle caps and carrying her wand tucked behind one ear. She tends to believe in things that others dismiss as garbage or insanity. Others like to call her "Loony" and hide her things but Luna is unruffled as her possessions usually return to her.
Luna joined the D.A. in her fourth year at school. She was the only student to participant at the battle at the Department of Mysteries who was not a Gryffindor and her actions earned fifty points for Ravenclaw. She ran into Harry while searching for her missing possessions and comforted him in his grief over Sirius' death.
Luna shared a carriage with Harry and Neville on their way back to school. She wore a pair of Spectrespecs from The Quibbler. During the ride Luna remarked that she missed the D.A. and that people expected Harry to have cooler friends than herself and Neville. When Hermione was upset after Transfiguration, Luna comforted her. Harry asked her to Slughorn's party to which she wore spangled silver robes. Luna is taking Divination and has Professor Firenze for her teacher. Luna served as commentator during the Gryffindor/Hufflepuff Quidditch match. Luna served as a messenger for Dumbledore to Harry when she went to visit Ron after his stay in the hospital wing. Of all the D.A. members, only Luna and Neville responded to Harry's summons.
Meaning of Name: Luna (Latin) - The Moon. In ancient times it was believed the phases of the moon influenced insanity, hence the world 'lunatic' is derived from the word for moon.

Moaning Myrtle
Birth Date: 1930s
Description: Squat, lank hair, pimples. Wears glasses and frequently cries.
Biography: A Muggle-born girl sorted into Ravenclaw in the forties. Myrtle was continually teased by other students, including Olive Hornby. In 1943 Myrtle was killed by the basilisk in the second floor girl's toilet. After death, Myrtle remained to haunt Olive until the Ministry forced her back to the toilet.
Myrtle aided Harry and even offered to share her toilet with him if he died. She helped him figure out the egg clue and even served as a sort of confidant to Draco Malfoy in his sixth year.
Meaning of Name: Myrtle (English) - An evergreen shrub. In ancient Greece the myrtle was sacred to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

Padma Patil
Birth Date: 1980
Description: Long dark hair, dark eyes.
Biography: Padma is the twin sister of Parvati Patil. While Parvati was made a Gryffindor, Padma was sorted to Ravenclaw. Aside from the brief reference to the Patil twins in the sorting scene, Padma does not surface until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Parvati suggests her sister as a date for Ron Weasley. Padma was not known to either Harry or Ron, a fact which can be deduced from Harry's hope that Padma's nose was not off center. Padma was not impressed with her date and appeared sulky at the ball, though this might have been because her date was paying more attention to Hermione than to her, leaving her on the sidelines while other couples were dancing. When Ron told her he would not dance with her at all, she went to join her sister and the Beauxbatons boys. Padma appeared to warm to Ron after the second task and made a point of talking to him in the hall. The inference in the book is that her interest grew as his popularity grew, but remember Ron had made a very bad first impression. It is possible she saw more in him than the boy who jealously watched one his best female best friends dancing with another boy. The second task also occurred two months after the ball, allowing her irritation to cool.
In her fifth year at Hogwarts, Padma was made a prefect along with Anthony Goldstein. She was also a part of Dumbledore's Army.
During her sixth year, Padma and Parvati's parents wished to remove them from Hogwarts but the twins convinced them to allow them to stay in school. The morning after Dumbledore's death, however, the twins went home.
Meaning of Name: Padma: (Hindu) Lotus. Padma is also a name of Lakshmi, a Hindu goddess who rises from the primordial ocean to become the wife of Visnu. She was an inspiration for Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Padma was also a patroness of learning.
Patil: (Indian) Chief, a surname originally from the north of India.

Meaning of Name: There are numerous female ghosts called the Grey Lady scattered throughout the British Isles. At Scotland's Glamis Castle is one of the more famous, said to be the ghost of Lady Janet Glamis. While her son was forced to watch, Janet was burned at the stake as a witch on Castle Hill, Edinburgh in 1537, on charges of plotting to poison King James V. The motive for her execution was more political than magical; Janet had the misfortune to have been born a Douglas, a relative of the King's hated stepfather. The Grey lady appears in the chapel and above the Clock Tower at Glamis Castle, where Janet lived with her husband.

Rowena Ravenclaw
Birth Date: c. 900s
Description: Unknown
Biography: One of the greatest witches of her day, Rowena Ravenclaw joined with Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin to found Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The exact date of her birth and the founding of Hogwarts are in contention, but it is known that Hogwarts was founded around a thousand years ago, in an age when Muggles greatly feared magic. Ravenclaw was from the glen, described as fair, and prized cleverness in her hand picked students. It is thought that she may have suggested the continually changing floor plan of the school. Rowena was great friends with Helga Hufflepuff, however frictions arose between the four founders and they began to fight amongst themselves and their friendships eroded. When Slytherin finally left over his desire to restrict magical education to only those students from magical families, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff were left to run the school without him.
The circumstances and date of her death, nor the location of her grave are not known at this time.
Meaning of Name: Rowena (English) - Fame and joy. Possibly an anglicized version of Ronwen (Welsh) - bright spear, or Ronixen (mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle).
