"Still Tethered"

Sandoval hurried into his office and called up the image from the corridor 3-A security camera. He watched as a relieved Kincaid continued to rub at his neck and suppressed a smirk. You might think its over, Major, but reality has a funny way of being quite deceptive with regards to the truth of a situation.

Sandoval knew that Kincaid was even less loyal to the Companions than he appeared and wanted to take no chances. After the debacle with Marquette, having another high ranking person exposed as a Resistance agent would cost him more than he could afford. Still, if it came to needing to expose Kincaid, Sandoval was determined that he would be the one to do it. If that should happen he would do all he could to minimize damage to himself by shifting the blame to Da'an for allowing the Major the luxury of serving as a protector without a cyber viral implant.

He narrowed his eyes as he watched Kincaid met up with Renee Palmer in the hallway.

"Those things come out a lot easier than they go in." Kincaid said.

"I'll take your word for it." Palmer replied, obviously uncomfortable with the subject. Sandoval mentally filed the threat of CVI implantation for possible future use against Palmer.

He waved away the image. After seeing through the other protector's eyes and hearing through his ears without anything gained, Sandoval was tired of watching Kincaid. Too bad one of them couldn't just take a long vacation. Sandoval almost grinned at the likely response should he ask such of thing of any Taelon, even Da'an.

"I take my amusement where I can." Sandoval whispered. He stared at the blank screen of his global for a moment before switching back to the security camera and observing Kincaid converse with a shuttle tech about the merits of a proposed upgrade. Sandoval supposed Palmer must have used the portal, but Kincaid was scheduled to ferry Da'an to a function in Vermont in two hours. The implant palmed a button on the global and a tiny transmitter secretly implanted in Kincaid's brain during the removal of the surveillance implant activated and sent him a signal giving the Major's precise location. In the hanger, Kincaid paused and winced in mid-conversation.

"What's that?" He asked the tech.

"What is what sir?" The puzzled tech inquired, looking at Kincaid worriedly.

Sandoval turned off the transmitter. His test was complete.

Kincaid shook his head wearily. "Nothing, I guess just an after effect of the procedure."

"I understand." The volunteer said. "Sir, are you sure you are all right?"

"I think so."

Sandoval smiled. Kincaid might be all right, but he was also not completely off his tether.

"Enjoy your freedom while you can, Major." Sandoval said. "It won't last, and I have a way to track you down if you decide to engage in stupidity."
