"Someday"

"You do have a child in this world...we can tell from the blood: it's a boy."

Ronald Sandoval shifted uncomfortably on his hospital bed after the doctor left him to consider the news she had just delivered. A child. He and Dee Dee had wanted to start a family, but everything got in the way and now they would never have the chance.

His CVI kicked in and brought forth other memories with the vividness in which he had originally experienced them.

"Do you carry any pictures in your wallet, Major?" He had asked. He stared at the photograph of himself and Dee Dee that he always kept where most people put their driver's license.

"Only my ID. Why?" Kincaid had responded with a perplexed expression on his face.

"Evidence."

"Of what?" The Major asked, confused.

"That you were here."

Evidence. A son was far more evidence than a few pictures of the departed stashed into his wallet where only he could see them. His son was a tie to the present and the future, not the past.

Sandoval stared at his global, lying on a nearby table. Running a DNA search would be an exercise in futility. Obviously his son's DNA had either never been entered into the system or removed at some time or else the search would have found him. With a sigh of frustration he turned his gaze to stare up at the ceiling.

Really, he could not fault his son's guardians from wanting to shield the child from him. After all, the revelation that he had a son would simply have made an addition to the target list of the Resistance, and other extremist groups with a grudge against the Taelons. Sandoval also had to concede that his reputation was not entirely sterling, but in circumstances as he was in it was impossible to have bloodless hands.

Not to mention that the Taelons might do something to the boy. A test of loyalty perhaps? Removal of an encumbrance as they removed his wife.

Despite all the very logical reasons that existed not to seek his son out, Sandoval felt a pull to find him. All he wanted was to see his child, to know that he was safe and happy. Perhaps someday after his plans had come to fruition they could meet as the parent and child that they were.

"A time, a place a woman."

Sandoval sat up suddenly. Who was his son's mother? He had kept in contact with most of his former girlfriends after they had broke up and knew for certain that none had become pregnant by him. He frowned. To be sure there were times from his college days he could not fully account for, but the child's guardian's seemed to know his identity...

"A few gene oddities the scanner could not process..."

Then it clicked. A hybrid child. The Taelons had him put through a battery of medical tests prior to his implantation and they had access to his DNA ever since. He recalled hearing something about the successful creation of Taelon-Human hybrids some years ago, though that was one of the few projects Zo'or was not involved in. The project predated his appointment as Protector to the Synod leader, and had been shelved years before by the time of Quo'on's death.

It appeared to fit the facts, but for some reason that Sandoval could not pin down, it seemed not complete. He resolved himself to spend as much time he could using the energy signature readout he had taken from Zo'or, obtained for a purpose as important as this, to finding more information on his son.

A movement caught his eye and Sandoval saw Major Kincaid staring at him with a contemplative expression on his face. Why did it seem that only Kincaid cared about his condition? In retrospect, the Protector had seemed concerned, but he also worried about injured Volunteers as well. Still, it was nice to see genuine concern in someone's eyes if he could not see it in the eyes of his nameless, faceless son.
