"Only For a Moment"

The young man gripped the spindled wooden railing to steady himself. With all the commotion below, his unorthodox entrance had gone completely unnoticed - which was exactly as he had hoped. He did not have much time to begin with, and there would be many complications if so much as a glimpse of him was caught by the wrong person.

He prepared himself to do what he must. It was horrifying and distasteful and violated just about every moral precept he could summon to memory, but it was the only way he could think of to make things right. He knew too well the path the future would take if things remained unaltered. It had taken a great deal of arguing to be permitted to do this, he only hoped the result was worth it.

Unfortunately he could not get a decent shot. He had only this one brief chance and he could hear every second tick away as though his heart now beat to the precise and unforgiving rhythm of a clock. The young man darted through the shadows to a better position a few feet away.

He watched the scene unfold below him, a scene he had scene many times before both in memory and video, and knew that in a second he would have the perfect opportunity. He closed his eyes so he would not have to witness the deadly energy strike the darkly handsome man below him and fired his own shaquarava. He threw himself back into the shadows, hitting his head hard enough against the wall to draw blood. The pain barely entered his thoughts as he closed his gray-green eyes and waited for the scene to fade away. His mission was complete. Below were shouts of confusion and a growing shower of brilliant light that filled the building from stone floor to vaulted ceiling and completely masked the young man's own disappearance in a similar cloud.

Just then, the doors just open to admit several baffled people with weapons drawn. They skidded to a halt a few feet down the aisle. "What just happened? Where's Hag'el? And Lt. Beckett?"

William Boone climbed wearily to his feet. The implant shook his head as he spoke, he did not understand what had just happened, his blast had not actually hit Ha'gel. Boone's eyes strayed for a moment to the choir loft above him. Whatever it was had come from that direction. He would discuss this with Jonathan later, for the time being he needed to get the police and Companions out of St. Michael's Church. "Ha'gel got to Beckett, but he's gone now."
