"Knowing What to Expect"

Liam Kincaid watched the Volunteers remove the hybrid infants from the Hartleys attic with a strange sense of longing. Renee had already expressed her confusion as to what would drive Stephen and Belle Hartley to steal and alter the children, the sheriff had likewise offered the usual and expected motives of insanity and Resistance affiliation, but Liam understood.

He glanced down at his hands, remembering the shaquarava once present, or perhaps merely dormant. It was frustrating in the extreme not to know what to expect in his development. The shaquarava had appeared without warning during his and Daans encounter with the replicant, and they had vanished shortly after he used them to temporarily disable the probe at Mt. Weather. Despite the situations he had found himself in since, they had not returned.

Liam had wanted them to simply go away ever since he had nearly killed Augur last year. When his wish finally came true, however, he felt a pang of loss for a part of him that was so deeply tied to his Kimeran heritage. A legacy from Hagel, something he would now never be able to understand.

Steven Hartley was brought out onto the porch by one of the Volunteers. He was extremely docile as he was led toward the waiting shuttle, oblivious to the stares and whispers of the townspeople who had gathered to watch the spectacle. Already rumors were flying, the most popular, at least as far as Liam was able to gather, was the sheriffs theory. In this town the Resistance seemed to be the root of all evil.

Liam wondered what would happen to Stephen now. He had already ascertained that he was being transferred to Zoors custody and Liam had a suspicion that his own fate would be far worse than Stephens should the secret of his heritage become known to the Synod leader.

His global started to beep. Most likely Daan calling to order him back to Washington D.C. to explain his actions. It would likely not be a pleasant conversation. At least Liam knew what to expect at the embassy.
