Secret of the Bloodstone Chapter 1 The Mission One day Jenn-ai and her friend, Neena, were watching TV, waiting for the new episode of "Sailor Moon". While they were engrossed in the adventures of Sailor Moon, Jenn-ai's cat, Selene, entered the room. Selene observed her owner and tried to get her attention. "Ahem." Jenn-ai and Neena whirled around, expecting to find an intruder. All they saw was Selene, the cat, so they returned to the TV. "Ahem!" The girls looked and saw Selene staring at them. "Excuse me," said Selene, "but. . ." Selene didn't get to finish; Jenn-ai and Neena started screaming. "Your cat. . . talked!" Neena shouted. "I know!" "Excuse me, girls, please listen!" Selene tried to be heard over the noise. When they quieted down, she continued. "There is someone you have to meet today!" Selene went on to explain that they were to meet this person in a coffee shop in one hour. At the coffee shop, Jenn-ai and Neena sat at their table, keeping an eye on the door. They saw three figures silhouetted in the doorway, one with distinct long pigtails. "Hey, Jenn-ai," Neena said, "don't they look like. . ." "They must be!" Jenn-ai exclaimed as the girls approached their table. "Sailor Moon! Sailor Venus! Sailor Mercury!" they cried in unison. "Hi, Sailor Scouts," Serena greeted them. She pulled up a chair to the table and sat down, Mina and Ami followed suit. Mina's white cat, Artemis, leaped off her shoulder and sat on the table. "Um, Serena," Neena said, "we're not really Sailor Scouts." "Well, you are now," Mina replied. "Kind of exciting, isn't it." "Luna! Luna, where are you? Come here," Serena called. Presently, a black cat with a golden crescent on her forehead walked up to them. In her mouth were two short scepters. Luna leaped up on the table and dropped the scepters in front of Serena. "Now, Serena," the black cat spoke softly, "make sure you explain everything." "Oh, Luna, you worry too much. Jenn-ai, Neena, you have been chosen to be honorary Sailor Scouts because. . . well, Luna told me, but I forgot." (A groan came from the direction of the cat, Mina and Ami.) "Anyway, you know I'm really busy defending Tokyo from the Negaverse." (Luna made another derisive sound.) "And not to mention that little brat, Rini. ." "Hey, meatball-head, what are you doing?" a voice called from the doorway. The girls gasped and turned to see Darien standing mere feet away. He joined the group at the table. Serena paused, as if deciding how to react. "I'm giving Jenn-ai and Neena very important information so they can be honorary Sailor Scouts," she replied as seriously as she could. "You haven't told them much yet," Artemis admonished. "Come on, Serena, we'll be here forever at this rate." "Maybe if you'd give me a chance I'd get this done," Serena said exasperatedly. Neena tried to hide her laughter, but Serena saw her anyway. "Oh, shut up Raye!" Everyone at the table gave Serena a strange look. "I'm not Raye," claimed Neena, "I'm. . ." "Did somebody call me?" A tall girl walked up behind Serena, her long black and purple hair trailing behind. Lita followed her into the café, but the table was getting crowded. "Why don't we go somewhere else, this might look suspicious," Luna advised. "Why?" Lita asked. "There's no one here." Everyone spun away from the table to check out the rest of the café. It was completely empty. "Well, that takes care of that. Now, um, the scepters. . ." Serena tried to remember. "You still haven't explained those? You are so slow," Raye chastized. "Lita, can you take care of Jenn-ai?" "Sure," she replied. "Jenn-ai, you know I have the power of Jupiter, right? Well, you will have the power of Earth. Basically, there's four elements of Earth: fire, wind, water and land, or earth itself. I think Sailor Mars has fire down, so you will have the earth. Along with that goes earthquakes and whatever else, but the really cool thing is that you'll have the ability to fly." "To fly?" Jenn-ai asked in awe. "Uh-huh. Like I said, cool." "Neena," Raye added, "you are Sailor Andromeda, as in the star. You will have the power of the Andromeda crystal. I don't know how they came up with that, but it wasn't for me to decide. Your scepter is also a very powerful wand known as the Daystar. With it you can blind your enemies. Oh, and I couldn't let Jenn-ai have an unfair advantage, so take these. I think you know what they are." Raye handed Neena part of her own special power: small sheets covered in script to freeze the opposition. "You'll also need your communicators. Where are they? Serena!" "What? Stop yelling at me, Raye!" "Communicators." "Oh, yeah. Here, catch." Serena tossed two flat panels to Raye. "Well, that should be all." She glanced at Luna for confirmation. "Good luck Sailor Scouts." "Yeah, you'll need it," Darien added. He and the Sailor Scouts left as noisily as they had arrived, mostly because of Serena and Raye's bickering. Jenn-ai and Neena sat in the deserted café for a while, trying to absorb their encounter with the Sailor Scouts. It was just too strange. "Neena, does this mean we're princesses too? All the other Scouts are." "I'd think that would require having a planet." "Darien didn't have his own planet, he was a prince from the Earth, probably one of many. I could be royalty from Earth, and you could have been the princess of Andromeda." "I don't think there's any people on Andromeda, it's a star." "You probably didn't think there were any people anywhere but Earth. So how do you explain any of the Scouts being princesses or the entire Moon Kingdom?" "Anything's possible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up unless you turn out to be Darien's long lost little sister, and I know how much you'd hate that." Some time later they met up with their other friends on the way to the movies. The group was going to the opening of the brand-new movie theater downtown. It was supposed to be a state of the art cinema with 20 screens, so it seemed like half the city showed up for the premiere. "Hey Jenn-ai," Neena whispered. "Do you think this could be run by agents of the Negaverse or something? That's how they operate on TV--open up some brand-new thing. Well, that's how Jadeite worked, anyway." "Get real, Neena. Like they're going to be so obvious. Can you imagine what the odds are of just stumbling upon the bad guys?" In the middle of the movie, Jenn-ai and Neena left their seats to get some food and to get a glimpse of the Sailor V movie playing next door. When they inched the theater doors open for a preview of Sailor V, a bright white light flashed and blinded them. When they blinked away the effects, they noticed something out of the ordinary. "Neena," Jenn-ai asked, "weren't there people sitting here a moment ago?" "There sure were. The Negaverse must be behind this. I'd say this a job for the Sailor Scouts!" Neena exclaimed. She paused and said, "But how are we supposed to transform?" "Well, we start with this." Jenn-ai held up her scepter topped with the symbol of the wind. "If I was Sailor Jupiter I'd say 'Jupiter Power', but I'm not. How about. . . no, that's not right. Jenn-ai looked around frustratedly, searching for an idea. "How about this," Neena cried, raising her scepter high. "Andromeda Power!" Neena felt a cool sensation wash over her. She looked down to see a red skirt and high-heeled sandals. In one white-gloved hand was a gold and white staff with a silver crystal in the center: the Daystar. "I guess I said the right thing." By that time Jenn-ai had also transformed into a purple blue and green outfit. She ran to throw open the theater doors. "Wait," Sailor Andromeda screamed. "What about Lesia, Nancelle, and the others?" "They won't believe us. We have a better chance of saving them by stopping the Negaverse now!" They ran into the pitch black theater; not a single light was on. "I can't see a single thing," Sailor Earth complained. "I can fix that." Sailor Andromeda tossed the light staff up in the air. "Daystar--illumination." They weren't sure how it worked, but the Daystar made the room as bright as a sunny day. There wasn't a single shadow in the entire place. "Come out, come out wherever you are," Sailor Andromeda sang. "You'll wish I hadn't, Sailor Scout," a sinister voice replied, materializing in midair, right in front of the movie screen. "Jadeite? But I thought someone got rid of you. I don't think it was Zoisite. No, she killed poor Nephrite. . ." "Shut up!" the voice commanded, cutting off Sailor Andromeda. "I am Goshenite, and you, Sailor Scouts, have reached the end of your reel." Round metal disks resembling movie-reel canisters rained down on the girls. While Sailor Andromeda took refuge under a chair, Sailor Earth stood up and said calmly, "I call upon the power of the Earth. Send these canisters, and Goshenite, back to the Negaverse. Earthquake thrash!" As soon as she spoke the words, the ground began to shake. A rift opened in the floor, and the cannisters were sucked in. Goshenite waved a hand, disappeared and reappeared behind Sailor Andromeda. "You'll have to do better than that, Sailor girls." "I don't know about this. Well, here goes--Andromeda crystal splash!" Sailor Andromeda exclaimed. She raised both hands over her head and a crystal formed between them. She flung it at Goshenite, not sure of what it would do. Goshenite held out a hand and the crystal vanished. "Your efforts are pathetic and useless. Prepare for the powers of the Negaverse." "How do we stop Goshenite?" Sailor Earth asked. "I don't know, but I can try." Sailor Andromeda touched the tiara on her brow. "This worked on TV," she muttered. "Star Tiara magic!" The tiara gleamed like a golden discus as it flew towards Goshenite. "You haven't seen the last of me," Goshenite warned, dematerializing. Sailor Andromeda's tiara clattered harmlessly to the ground where Goshenite had stood. Sailor Andromeda went to pick up her tiara, and in the middle of it, she found a large, garnet-colored stone. "Sailor Earth, look at this. Nasty Goshenite dropped something. I wonder what it is." "It appears to be some sort of gemstone or crystal," Earth said scientifically. "Hey, even I knew that! But what does it do? It's not a rainbow crystal, and it certainly isn't the Imperium Silver Crystal." "I don't know what it is, exactly, so we'll just keep it for awhile." Earth took the crystal and pocketed it. (Yes, there are secret hidden pockets on those outfits.) When the Scouts were nearly out the door, they were aware of noises within the theater. They had won the battle, if not the war. The occupants of the theater returned, unharmed. Later that day they returned to Neena's house to review the day's events. Jenn-ai set the stone on Neena's table next to Selene. While Jenn-ai was still trying to figure out how her cat found Neena's house, Neena took charge. "This meeting of the Sailor Scouts is officially called to order." "Hey, who made you leader?" Jenn-ai complained. "I've got the Star Tiara." "Big deal. How do you know mine doesn't work?" Neena's smile vanished. Selene leaped between them with a wand in her mouth. "Actually Jenn-ai, Neena's right. Only her tiara works, which is why you get the Terra Wand. I assume you already know what it does." "Yeah, if it's like the Crescent Wand" she said, taking the wand. It was identical to Serena's except that Jenn-ai's lacked the Imperium Silver Crystal. "Moon, or I guess in this case, Earth healing activation. It turns Negaverse monsters into normal people (or as normal as they can be). Its also the symbol of the Sailor Scout leader." "Not this time," Selene interrupted. "There are only two of you. Work together--you don't need a leader. Remember your mission: you're supposed to fight the Negaverse, not each other." She sighed, "Now I understand how Luna feels." "All right, let's get back to business," Neena ordered. "First, we've met our new enemy, Goshenite. Following the great Negaverse tradition, I assume the name's some kind of stone. Maybe it's the same type of stone that was dropped. Well, little stone," she said picking up the crystal, "let's look you up in my good old rock book." Neena went to the bookshelf and selected a gray paperback book. She thumbed through the index. "Let's see. . . Zoisite. . . Nephrite. . . Malachite. . . Jadeite. . ." "Why are you going backwards, Neena?" Jenn-ai asked. "Here we are--Goshenite, page 512." She skimmed for the page and started reading. Jenn-ai watched as Neena's eyes widened in shock, and the book tumbled from her hands to the floor. "Neena, what is it? What's wrong?" Jenn-ai wondered what could be so horrible about a rock. Neena replied with only one word that spoke volumes. "Beryl." Jenn-ai's puzzled expression also turned to shock. "You mean. . . as in Queen Beryl? I thought she was long dead." Neena shrugged. "I guess she wasn't as dead as we thought. Oh, what are we going to do?" she wailed. "We can't defeat Queen Beryl by ourselves!" Chapter 2 Face-Off "Ami, come in Ami, please," Jenn-ai said into her communicator. She and Neena were desperate for help. They needed a plan, and if Ami, the Sailor Scout genius, couldn't think of anything, no one could. "I'm sorry, girls, but I'm afraid I can't help you," the tiny image of the blue-haired girl replied. "If we didn't defeat Queen Beryl the first time, then I don't know how to destroy her. I can offer this advice: if you can cooperate and work as a true team, then the Sailor Scouts will always triumph over evil." "One more thing, Ami," Neena interjected. "Where do you get those great lines?" "Serena was right," Ami laughed. "You really do sound like Raye. Well, good luck fellow Sailor Scouts." "We're back where we started," Jenn-ai said. "Hey, let's put it this way--Jadeite, Zoisite, and friends were nasty, but not invincible. Can high and mighty Queen Beryl be all that much worse?" "That's really comforting," Jenn-ai replied sarcastically. "Remember, it was Beryl who killed off Jadeite and Zoisite. If the original Sailor Scouts couldn't get rid of her permanently, how are we supposed to defeat her?" Before Neena got a chance to answer, her phone rang. She picked up the receiver and motioned for Jenn-ai to listen in on the extension in the next room. "Hey, Neena, this is Lesia. I was wondering if you and Jenn-ai wanted to go see the new Sailor V movie with me tomorrow." "Well, OK. We'll meet you outside the theater at about 2:00 p.m. That should be enough time for the 2:20 showing." "Sure," Lesia agreed. "Bye." When they hung up, Jenn-ai raced back to Neena's room. "That was weird!" "I know. Lesia hates Sailor V. She'd never waste her time or money on the movie." "Something's really wrong here," Jenn-ai noted. "Well, I guess we'll find out tomorrow. Hey, you know what we forgot to ask Ami about? That stone!" "You don't need to," Selene said from her perch on the table. "It is known as the Bloodstone, and it is a very powerful object in the right hands." "What does it do?" Neena asked. "Queen Beryl can use it to unleash all sorts of creatures from the Negaverse." "That doesn't help us," Jenn-ai muttered. "Can we do anything with it?" Selene looked embarrassed. "I. . . I don't know. No one outside of the Negaverse has ever been in possession of Bloodstone." "Great. So we have this stone that I'm sure Queen Beryl wants back, and we don't even know how to use it!" Neena fumed. * * * Shortly after 2:00 p.m. the next day, Jenn-ai rushed to the entrance of the movie theater. Selene dug her claws into Jenn-ai's shoulder so she wouldn't fall off. They scanned the crowd for Neena and Lesia. "There she is," Selene pointed with one slender paw. "I'd recognize Neena's hair anywhere." Sure enough, there was Neena in a blue dress and black jacket, her long wavy purple hair caught up in a ponytail high atop her head. Standing next to her was blonde, green-eyed Lesia, who Neena claimed resembled Zoisite, vaguely. "Jenn-ai, are you sure you have the Crescent Wand?" Selene asked. "I agree with Neena that Lesia is behaving quite strangely." "Yes, I have it. Now be quiet. No one's ever going to believe in a talking cat." Selene made an indignant sound. Jenn-ai nervously adjusted her blue-black tresses and approached her friends. Jenn-ai and Neena started to walk towards the ticket booth when Lesia stopped them. "I already got us tickets. We can go right in." Jenn-ai and Neena exchanged glances and followed Lesia into the theater. They easily found seats in the darkened theater; no one else was there. I've got a bad feeling about this, Jenn-ai and Neena thought simultaneously. A light went on at the front of the theater, illuminating a lone figure. "Well, well, little Sailor Scouts, I'm sure you feel foolish walking right into my trap." "Us, foolish, Goshenite, or should I say, Queen Beryl? Never!" Jenn- ai shouted. "Earth Power!" Sailor Earth was soon joined by Sailor Andromeda. They stood back to back and glared at Beryl. "I am Sailor Earth!" "And I am Sailor Andromeda!" "We are the Sailor Scouts. We will fight for justice and truth; we will right wrongs and triumph over evil. In the name of the Earth and the Stars, we will punish you," they concluded in unison. "Oh, please," Beryl said in disgust, "spare me those pathetic little speeches." She raised her hands, the long polished nails gleaming like red talons. "Now you will witness the full powers of the Negaverse. But first, give me the Bloodstone." "Isn't this getting a little monotonous?" Andromeda asked dryly. "Hand over the crystal; prepare to meet your doom," she imitated. "All you Negacreeps sound alike. I'm getting really tired of this." She brought her hand to her forehead. "Star Tiara Magic!" The blue gem in her tiara flashed as it spun towards Beryl. Suddenly, Lesia jumped in front of her. "You will not harm my queen," Lesia chanted in a trance-like state. "Lesia, get out of the way!" Earth cried. Lesia wouldn't move; she remained glued to the spot. "Stop, Star Tiara, stop," Sailor Andromeda pleaded. When the tiara was mere inches away from Lesia, it abruptly stopped spinning and changed direction. Like a boomerang, it returned to Sailor Andromeda. "Defeating me will not be so easy," Queen Beryl warned. Before they realized what was happening, Queen Beryl turned Lesia into a hideous creature. Sailor Earth and Sailor Andromeda were momentarily stunned by the sight. "Sailor Andromeda, use the Daystar to blind it. . . her so I can change her back," Earth ordered. "Oh, I can do better than that." Sailor Andromeda pulled out the talismans of characters that Raye had given her and closed her eyes to concentrate. "I call upon the powers of the Stars. Freeze this creature where she stands so we may change her back." The sheet stuck to the creature's head and it became paralyzed. "Now, Sailor Earth!" Sailor Earth spun the Terra Wand in the air. "Earth healing activation!" With a great flash of light, the creature turned back into Lesia. "We did it!" Sailor Andromeda exclaimed. "Yeah, but where did you pick up that trick?" "Sailor Mars gave it to me," Andromeda smiled. "You may have defeated my creature, but you still have to face me," threatened Beryl. "Now, for the last time, give me the Bloodstone!" "I'm glad this is the last time, because I'm tired of your asking. By the way, my answer is no," retorted Sailor Andromeda. "Sailor Andromeda, your big mouth is going to get us in trouble," Sailor Earth hissed. "What's the big deal anyway, Beryl. It's just a red rock; it doesn't do much." "Enough! Perhaps you need a little persuasion to relinquish the Bloodstone." Queen Beryl and the theater vanished. Sailor Earth and Sailor Andromeda found themselves alone inside a gigantic black box. Sailor Earth flew to the high ceiling to look for a way out but found nothing. "Earthquake thrash!" she shouted, but their prison didn't even rattle. "We can't use our powers. Mine doesn't have any effect, and you'd probably succeed in drowning us." "Where's Tuxedo Mask when you need him," Andromeda quipped. "Not funny. Andromeda, how are we ever going to get out of here?" Earth cried. She glared at their prison with malice. "It's all because of this stupid rock," Sailor Andromeda complained bitterly, holding up the Bloodstone. She began to sing to herself, and the Bloodstone started to glow. Sailor Earth noticed and told Andromeda to keep singing. "Louder!" she advised. "What I'd give to return To the life that I knew lately But I know that I can't Solve my problems going back. . ."* "It's getting brighter," Earth shouted. "Keep going!" "As my life has been altered Once it can change again Build higher walls around me Change every lock and key Nothing lasts, nothing holds all of me"* Sailor Andromeda raised the Bloodstone above her head as beams of light radiated from its center. Andromeda and Earth were bathed in a deep red light. When the light dimmed, their surroundings had changed drastically. "Where are we?" asked Sailor Earth. "Welcome to Crystal Tokyo," a voice greeted them. "Your majesty," the girls gasped in unison. Chapter 3 The Secret Revealed "Please, don't be alarmed, Jenn-ai and Neena," the Moon Princess told them. "We have been expecting you." "How do you know who we are?" Jenn-ai demanded, then she realized what the princess said. "You've been expecting us?" "Yes. Maybe I should explain. You see, this is the future, to you anyway." "How far in the future. . .for us?" Neena asked. "Well, my daughter Rini is twelve years old now," Princess Serena replied. Her guests appeared shocked. "Now as to how you got here," she continued. "You, Sailor Andromeda, Neena, were the first person not from the Negaverse to be able to use the Bloodstone. It has great powers and was able to send you here. Unfortunately, after all these years little has been learned about the stone. We know it has the powers of teleportation and time travel, but how it is activated is a mystery. Only two people in all of Crystal Tokyo can harness the powers of the Bloodstone. They are you Neena, and Miriya." "Who is Miriya?" Neena asked. "Miriya is your ten-year-old daughter; you will be very proud of her, I'm sure. The one definite conclusion reached about the Bloodstone is that you and Miriya are only able to use it by singing. Miriya will probably have a better voice than you one day. But tell me, how did you initiate the stone when you came here?" "I sang a song called 'Home'." "Well, that makes sense, sort of. This will eventually be your home, although I don't want to tell you too much of the future. Well, Sailor Scouts, your first mission has been accomplished. I wish you the greatest luck on the rest. My people will send you home, back to your own time. Neena, would you please give me the Bloodstone?" "Sure, your Majesty," Neena replied. "But won't that mean there are two Bloodstones in this time, causing a paradox or something?" "No, because you will take this with you." The Princess handed Neena a silver box. Neena opened it to find a silver amulet with the Bloodstone as its center. "Thank you." Neena and Jenn-ai started to leave, but Neena turned back. "Your majesty, may I ask a favor of you? I know you can't let me see to much of the future, but can I please see Miriya before we go?" * * * A little girl sat before an easel in her room. She was surrounded by paints, brushes, markers and pencils strewn on the floor. A streak of red paint ran from one of her luminous blue-violet eyes across her forehead to her midnight-blue hair. Neena stared in amazement at Miriya, who was absorbed in her artwork. Miriya gazed at the painting while twisting a lock of long straight hair around her small fingers. "Miriya will grow up to be a great leader among our people," the Princess said knowingly. "She has special powers of her own. You may notice, Neena, she has the same color eyes as you and all Andromedans." "Your majesty, if I may ask," Jenn-ai said cautiously, "who is Miriya's father?" Neena blushed at the question. "I'm sorry, I can't tell you that. Let me just say that it won't be long before you meet him. A word of advice, though, things are not always what they seem." "Isn't that the truth," Neena commented. When it was time to leave, she found it hard to tear herself away from the sight of her little girl, but she knew they had to return home. Jenn-ai was relieved when they were finally safe at home. Selene had begun to think that she would never see Jenn-ai and Neena again after she lost them in the theater. When Jenn-ai was back in her room, she tried to make sense of their adventure. The future had been so disorienting. She still couldn't get over the shock of seeing Neena's daughter. The Sailor Scout business was becoming a major stress factor. But still, she thought, tomorrow is another day. Who knows what it will bring. * "Home" Alan Menken & Tim Rice * Ibid. 1
