THE RAINFOREST FOUNDATION

The Rainforest Foundation is run by people who are committed wholeheartedly to the protection of the homelands of under-represented peoples and societies. And while trying to protect the people of the rainforests, they at the same time protect the many and varied wondrous species of animal whose home is also there. Their work in the field with individual groups is an essential response to the global need for us all to protect our communal homeland--the Earth.

It's Mission Statement

The Rainforest Foundation supports indigenous peoples and traditional populations in the rainforest in their efforts to protect their rights.

Launched in 1989, the Rainforest Foundation became the first organization to advocate the twin needs of protecting both the forest and its people, and to join forces with these people in developing and carrying out these goals--thus combining the defence of human rights, land rights and the environment.

During its first five years, the Rainforest Foundation concentrated on fulfilling the commitment made by Sting and his wife, Trudie Style, to Amazon Chief Raoni to demarcate the Menkragnoti territory in Brazil. This was a major, high-profile initiative which also helped to focus significant international attention on the global rainforest issue. The demarcation was achieved and the foundation launched a number of projects to aid the inhabitants and to assist them in securing their homes and developing their own education programmes.

The founders then reassessed the goals of the foundation and adopted a strategy aimed at stopping the destruction of rainforests worldwide and supporting their indigenous peoples and traditional populations. The foundation's global mission now is to campaign on the basis of an integrated approach to the protection of forests and their peoples through a global package of rainforest projects in target areas under threat. The Foundation also monitors intergovernmental rainforest policies, works with them to bring about improvements, and alerts the public to the importance fo protecting these irreplacable environments and their peoples.
