Lyric Recovery Festival

Saturday, April 29, 2 p.m.

Carnegie, Weill Hall, New York City

Submissions Guidelines

Eligibility

The main competition is open to any person over the age of 18.
New York City residents still attending secondary school are eligible for the special high school category ("HS") open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Reading Fee

In order to encourage a vast number of submissions from all sources, a reading fee of US$5.00 (total) is optional, though appreciated. Please make checks payable to "philophonema". HS contestants are exempted.

Manuscript Specifications

Send up to three unpublished poems in black on white 12 pt Times, Times New Roman or Arial type in English, French, German, Spanish or Italian. Translations of work originally created in any of these five languages are helpful, but not required. Work originally created in a sixth language (e.g. Czech, Japanese, etc.) should be accompanied by a translation in one of the other five.
The contestant’s name, address, phone and e-mail should appear in the upper right hand corner of each page. Poems that run to two pages and/or poems with accompanying translations should be stapled.
HS submissions are limited to one poem which should indicate grade and school affiliation.
There is a 3-minute performance limit per poem.

Deadline, Addresses and Accompanying Audio Media

The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2000.
E-mail submissions (paste preferred to attachment) go to [email protected] and will be acknowledged by return e-mail. Electronic submissions containing non-text visual displays are discouraged. Voice-only audio tracks accompanying the submission are permissible.
Snail mail submissions go to LyR Festival, Box 1141, Cathedral Station, New York 10025 USA. Include self-addressed, stamped postcard (or international reply coupons) for acknowledgment. Voice-only cassette tapes accompanying the submission are permissible. Manuscripts and tapes will not be returned.
Note that submission in an audio medium constitutes the grant of a license to the producers to use the same for all reasonable, event-related purposes.

Criteria

Lyric Recovery originated to encourage the musical reinfusion of poetry and to extend the lyric’s power to full capacity while demonstrating its global, multilingual dimension and multivoice possibilities.
The primary selection criteria are reach, craft, content and musicality.

Awards

The ten finalists will be notified of their selection in early April. Their names and source locations will be posted on the event web site shortly thereafter.
Finalists who are able to appear at the event will perform their finalist piece before a distinguished panel to determine the top awards. Finalists who are unable to appear will have their piece read by a performer selected by the producers. (Wherever feasible, translations will be made available to the panel and audience with the aid of the finalist.)
